Comparing Austin and Baton Rouge!

For as far back as I can remember, comparisons have been made between Louisiana’s state capitol city and Austin, Texas. In the 1960s the population of both cities were about the same. Austin and Baton Rouge were the homes of both the centers of state government and the location of each state’s major university. Both cities were laid back and growing at an average southern pace. So how do they rate today?

Secure the border before it’s too late

With an army of 10,000 migrants closing in on the Southern border, The White House is considering a range of options including a temporary halt to asylum. On Friday, it was reported that approximately 1,000 troops would be deployed to the border to provide additional resources to the U.S. Border Patrol. While this will be a good first step, it is woefully inadequate. The entire 2,000-mile border with Mexico should be secured with a heavy presence of our military and National Guard,

Work requirements and welfare: The lessons of history

The value of studying history is so that future generations don’t make the same mistakes as our forefathers. Having said that, it was stunning to watch the political tug-of-war that took place in Baton Rouge this past Legislative Session trying to add work requirements for Medicaid beneficiaries that now represent one-third of the state. Bills in both the House and the Senate stalled in Committee as the Legislative session ended, as Democrats fought it tooth and nail. So what does history tell us about this issue?
