Fusilier makes history in Erath

ERATH — Last Saturday’s special election in Erath yielded a historical result.
After more than 120 years, Clarence Fusilier will become the first African American to serve on the Erath council. Fusilier defeated Chris Hebert to earn the spot.
“It means a lot to me,” Fusilier said of breaking the barrier. “I am proud of that fact.”
The moment didn’t come without a little bit of stress. Fusilier won by 11 votes.
“I was sweating a little bit,” Fusilier said with a laugh.

Sales tax collection in Vermilion Parish stays positive despite COVID-19

Despite dealing with the COVID-19 for the last year, Vermilion Parish has not slowed down spending money.
The parish collected $353,195 more in sales tax this past January than last January.
For at least the second straight month, sales tax collection is up anywhere from 11 percent to as high as 23 percent in some municipalities.
In January, the Village of Maurice had a whopping 23 percent increase in sales tax collection.
The Village collected $67,472 or about $13,000 more than last year when COVID-19 was still overseas.

Abbeville man among more than dozen booked for narcotics offenses in Acadia Parish

CROWLEY — The Acadia Parish Sheriff Office recent narcotics booking are as follows:
• Elvin Vice, 58, of Abbeville: possession of alprazolam.
• Andretti Bate, 29, of Crowley: felon in possession of firearm; firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance; possession of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of juvenile; violation of controlled dangerous substance law; possession of firearm with an obliterated serial number; possession of synthetic marijuana.

Cleco donates $20,000 to establish endowed scholarship for Power Lineman and Electrical programs at SLCC

PINEVILLE, La. – March 23, 2021 – Today, Cleco made a $20,000 donation to South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) to establish an endowed scholarship for the college’s Power Lineman and Electrical programs.
The Cleco endowed scholarship will be used to recruit, retain and train students enrolled in these training programs. In 2018, Cleco contributed $50,000 to SLCC to help establish the Power Lineman program which recently celebrated the graduation of its fourth class.
