Sammy’s Truck: Picard honored by Maurice Volunteer Fire Department during dedication

MAURICE — On Sunday, January 27, Maurice Volunteer Fire Department honored their own Sammy Picard with a truck dedication. In late 2017, the department purchased a new truck; working number 622.
Among the many attendees, Maurice Mayor Wayne Theriot was the first to offer his kind words to ‘a good friend.’

Abbeville Police investigating Friday shooting

On the evening of Friday, Jan. 25, at approximately 8:46 p.m., officers of the Abbeville Police Department responded to the area of Schlessenger Street and MLK on a Shots Fired call.
Upon arriving in the area, officers located a male subject laying on the roadway with a single gunshot wound to the lower back, who was transported to Abbeville General Hospital a short time later.
Detectives were contacted and upon arriving and investigating were able to obtain security video from a local business.

Changes coming to project graduation in Vermilion Parish

The School Board is looking for a way to reel in project graduations throughout the parish. Until it figures that out, the school board was expected to suspend next year’s project graduation at Thursday night’s school board meeting.
The original idea of project graduation was to have seniors, who had just graduated that night, meet at one location and spend one final night together.
However, over the last 20 years, project graduation has become more massive when it comes down to raising money for the eight-hour event.

North Vermilion Middle Junior Dreams dance team brings home state titles

The North Vermilion Middle School Junior Dreams Dance Team sweeps up state titles at All-American Dance Team Competition this past Sunday at the Cajun Dome.
The team placed 1st in their Division II for both Jazz and Hip Hop routines. They went on to win first place overall (out of all 13 teams) across Division I, II, and III in Jazz and 1st Place Overall (out of all 10 teams) across Division I, II, III in Hip Hop, earning them title of State Champions of Junior High Jazz and Hip Hop.

Gueydan High School closes due to bat problem

GUEYDAN - Gueydan High School had to start the week off with an off day having to close the classrooms due to the on going bat problem and as a precaution to allow for a thorough inspection inside the building.
According to GHS Principal Brandy Broussard, GHS is closed “out of caution” and should reopen soon.
Workers will spend Monday and whatever days needed to safely catch the bats and seal any openings or holes that could be where the bats are getting in the school.
