ABBEVILLE — A Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Elma Marie Gumbs, 71, was held on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at 12:00 P.M at Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus Catholic Church in Abbeville, LA with Fr. Francois Sainte-Marie, Celebrant, officiating.
She will await the resurrection at Saint Paul Cemetery in Abbeville, LA.
A gathering of family and friends began at 9:00 A.M. until 11:30 A.M. at the Fletcher Funeral Home in Abbeville, LA with a rosary to be recited at 9:30 A.M.
A native of Ridge, LA and resident of Lafayette, LA, she passed at 11:22 A.M. on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center in Lafayette, LA.
She was a devout Catholic and member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Maurice, LA. In addition, she was employed at Lagneaux’s Restaurant in Lafayette, LA for over thirty years.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three sons: Kenneth Celestine, Irwin Celestine and Neal Gumbs all of Lafayette, LA; one daughter: Consuella Whitmire of Baton Rouge, LA; two brothers: Roy Hebert and Raymond Hebert both of Lafayette, LA; one sister: Lorita Goodie of Lafayette, LA, grandchildren, great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Marcell Hebert and Alma Comeaux Hebert; two brothers: Hayward Hebert and Joseph Hebert; sisters: Rena Hebert Stevens, Lorita Goodie and Irene Francis; one stepbrother: Leroy Hebert; stepsisters, Sophie Campbell and Alma Wilson.
