Gueydan High’s Nadine Lepretre is the Vermilion Parish High School Principal of the Year.

Principals of the Year named in Vermilion Parish

Dozier’s Ford, JHW’s Comeaux and Gueydan’s Lepretre recognized

There are tremendous teachers and faculty throughout the Vermilion Parish School System, which helps make it successful.
However, when looking at what makes everything go, don’t overlook the leadership at each school.
Three such leaders are honored as Vermilion Parish Principals of the Year. This year, the winners are Dozier Elementary School’s Andrea Ford, J.H. Williams Middle School’s Diane Comeaux and Gueydan High School’s Nadine Lepretre.
For Lepretre, this award is her in name only.
“Being chosen Vermilion Parish High School Principal of the Year is a great honor,” Lepretre said. “This award may say Principal of the Year, but it truly recognizes the hard work and dedication of the teachers and students at Gueydan High School. Running a school is not a one-person job. It takes a team of people and a whole community to support a school in reaching its goals every year.”
Vermilion Parish Superintendent Tommy Byler said Lepretre does a great job with a community that is different from others.
“Nadine has a different scenario than most running the districts only junior high and high school combo school,” Byler said. “This has a set of obstacles that most don’t understand.”
Comeaux has run various aspects of the education system during her career. This is undoubtedly a high point of that career.
“I am very excited and honored to be selected as Vermilion Parish Middle School of the Year,” Comeaux said. “I have held multiple roles during my time at J.H. Williams, beginning as a classroom teacher in 2014. I then advanced to Dean of Students, Assistant Principal, and then Principal. This is my 4th year as the proud principal of J.H. Williams. I feel a sense of accomplishment for the dedication and hard work that I invest in our school every day, fostering a positive learning environment, supporting teachers and staff, and contributing to the school’s overall success.
“I am looking forward to the continued growth of our students.”
While pleased with the win, it is the students and everyone else at the school for whom Comeaux is pleased.
“I believe that having the Principal of J.H. Williams selected as the Vermilion Parish Middle School Principal of the year is a win for the school as well as the community,” Comeaux said. “This recognition has boosted morale, inspired a sense of unity and accomplishment, and contributed to a more positive school culture. This has gained positive attention for our school, showcasing our commitment to excellence in education.
“We are JHW proud!”
Byler said the JHW community should take pride in what Comeaux has helped the school accomplish.
“Diane has worked extremely hard to get JHW to a C status,” Byler said of the school’s letter grade from the state. “She has had to overcome major staffing issues and has kept her focus on getting the students to believe in themselves.”
Like her peers, Ford looks beyond herself regarding what the award means.
“This recognition is not only a personal achievement,” Ford said, “but a collective celebration that encompasses our entire school community’s dedication, hard work and collaborative spirit. I want to express my deepest appreciation to the outstanding faculty and staff at Dozier Elementary. It is truly a privilege to work alongside such a talented and passionate group of educators. Their unwavering commitment to providing a high-quality education for our students is nothing short of inspiring. Each day, I witness their dedication and genuine care for the well-being and success of every child who walks through our doors.
“This award is as much theirs as it is mine, a testament to the incredible team we have built together.”
Byler said Ford serves as a firm foundation at Dozier.
“Andrea is passionate about being successful and knows how to get all of her team on board,” Byler said. “Dozier had a great jump in school performance under her leadership.”
Ford said the school system shouldn’t be overlooked.
“We are fortunate,” Ford said, “to have a district that provides support and guidance necessary for schools to successfully educate and grow each individual student to their full potential.”
During her 21-year career in education, Ford spent time as a teacher at Eaton Park, worked in Central Office, and led Kaplan Elementary as principal for 10 years. Coming to Dozier four years ago meant something special for Ford, who attended Dozier as a child.
“Being an educator and principal of Dozier Elementary is an honor and a privilege that I do not take lightly,” Ford said. I am deeply aware of the impact that educators have on their students’ lives, and I sincerely hope that I can leave a lasting mark on our little Bobcats.”

Vermilion Parish names Teachers of the Year

Dozier’s LeBlanc, NV Middle’s Miller and NV High’s Slason honored

Many have said that teaching is not a job but a calling.
Three educators in Vermilion Parish earn the honor of being called Teachers of the Year each year.
The Vermilion Parish School System recently announced Dozier Elementary School’s Mikel LeBlanc, North Vermilion Middle School’s Emily Miller, and North Vermilion High School’s Jonah Slason as this year’s honorees.
LeBlanc is a fourth-grade teacher at Dozier.
“Winning this award leaves me speechless as I am so grateful to receive this honor,” LeBlanc said. “Teaching is one of the greatest joys of my life, and it is extra special that I can teach in both the school and district I attended as a child. Representing Vermilion Parish is the honor of a lifetime because I feel so indebted to the wonderful educators who have impacted my life over the years and those who continue to impact it today.”
LeBlanc said she feels her passion for education helped her earn this recognition.
“Because I am so passionate,” LeBlanc said, “I put my heart daily into teaching. Teaching is so much more than a job to me; it’s building personal connections with each child; it’s teaching students new concepts and watching the light bulb go off when they finally make a connection with a concept they had previously struggled with; it’s holding them to high expectations and reminding them every chance you get how wonderful you think they are and how much you adore them; it’s seeing their reaction when you show up on a Saturday morning to cheer them on at their games and extracurriculars because you are one of their biggest fans. In addition to my passion for education, I am constantly making instructional decisions that support the diverse learners in my classroom and their individual needs while allowing them to make real-world connections, as well.”
Dozier Elementary Principal Andrea Ford agreed that LeBlanc’s passion for what she does is overflowing.
“Ms. Mikel has demonstrated an unparalleled passion and love for our students that truly sets her apart,” Ford said. “She exemplifies dedication and devotion to providing high-quality instruction that exceeds our expectations. Her commitment to shaping the minds and hearts of our students is truly noteworthy. One of Ms. Mikel’s exceptional qualities is fostering a culture of trust and love within her classroom. This positive environment directly influences student learning and creates a supportive atmosphere where our students flourish. Her impact reaches far beyond the confines of the classroom, leaving an everlasting mark on the lives of our little Bobcats.
“We are blessed to have Ms. Mikel as a member of our Dozier family. Her passion for education and unwavering dedication are an inspiration to us all. She is a true asset, and we are fortunate to witness her positive influence on our students.”
Miller is an 8th-grade social studies teacher who also works with the yearbook.
“I am completely overwhelmed with gratitude for being named Teacher of the Year,” Miller said. “We have so many amazing teachers in Vermilion Parish that go above and beyond for our students, so to be chosen by other educators who inspire me daily is a great honor.”
Miller focuses every day on being an inspiration to her students.
“I try to push my students to be the best version of themselves that they can be,” Miller said. “I try to offer them real-life experiences in the context of our Social Studies curriculum and make the learning relevant to them. When they feel that there is significance in learning what I am teaching them, they become much more invested in their education and success.
“I try to make sure the students enjoy coming to school every day and that learning is fun for them.”
Miller, who began student teaching at NVMS in 2019 and came on full-time a year later, credited the school’s administration and staff for cultivating an environment where success is possible. Principal Gina Davidson said on behalf of the administration that Miller is an integral part of what makes everything work.
“Exemplary, excellence and exceptional are but a few words to describe Emily Miller,” Davidson said. “She is a compassionate teacher who puts her students first. Emily is determined to meet the various needs of her students while building relationships and encouraging independence and growth among them. She is respected among her peers, offers an open-door policy to anyone wanting to observe her engaging teaching strategies, and collaborates with others to develop a strong team. Emily works hard to make North Vermilion Middle School the best it can be. All of these qualities that she possesses led to her coworkers’ nomination as the North Vermilion Middle School Teacher of the Year. We are so excited that the Vermilion Parish School System has chosen Emily to represent the parish as the Vermilion Parish Middle School Teacher of the Year.
“She is a class act.”
In Slason’s class, there’s no acting but plenty of singing. Slason has led the North Vermilion choir program for the past 10 years.
“I am incredibly honored and excited to be chosen as Vermilion Parish’s Teacher of the Year!” Slason exclaimed.
One can point to how Slason has earned the honor by bringing the best out of his students.
“One of the main focuses of my choir program is developing confidence through musicianship,” Slason said. “My students are constantly being pushed outside their comfort zone and motivated to do more in their extracurricular hours than just staring at a screen. The Choir students at North Vermilion are given opportunities to work on solos for our performances, honor choir auditions that happen all over Acadiana, sing for community events such as community festivals, nursing homes, sporting events, Veterans Day programs, and more, all while using teamwork to foster personal confidence. The phrase, ‘we’re only as strong as our weakest link,’ is true in our Choir as my students know that we must encourage each other and constantly work together to create music that blends with colorful harmony. We have daily lessons in leadership, as some students lead activities, patience, as some students are more advanced than others, and confidence, as singing is the one instrument we carry with us as a part of ourselves.”
North Vermilion Principal Denise Lotief is constantly amazed by what she sees from Slason.
“He is truly great,” Lotief said. “I’m so impressed that he can take a group of kids and build such a great program. More than teaching music, he is teaching kids to believe in themselves. Teaches them to be brave enough to perform.
“It’s a great thing to witness.”

Vermilion Parish Elementary Student of the Year Isabel Granger with Seventh Ward

Seventh Ward’s Isabel Granger credits family, school for her honor as Parish Elementary Student of the Year

Isabel Granger put in the hard work to earn the honor of being named Vermilion Parish Elementary Student of the Year.
However, the fifth-grader from Seventh Ward Elementary also credits the unwavering support from her family and a great school environment for helping her succeed.
“It feels nice,” Granger said of the honor. “It definitely feels good because my family is very supportive. My mom, dad and family have always liked to encourage me.
“They cheer me on.”
Isabel is one of the seven children of Kevin and Sarah Granger. The Grangers work with Family Missions Company in Big Woods. That work has created a tighter bond for the family, which includes Alyse, 27, Anika, 26, Soren, 22, Isaac, 11, Jonah, 7, and Esme, 6.
“We’re very close because we do a lot of traveling,” Granger said. “We go on a lot of mission trips.”
Those trips have allowed Isabel to visit India, the Philippines, El Salvador, Peru, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Costa Rica and different parts of the United States. Most recently, the family made a mission to Ecuador last summer. That has given the 10-year-old Granger a different perspective, even at a young age.
“It has,” Granger said. “I’ve seen so many different things. We have helped people who are poor. I’ve seen what it means to be a missionary and what is involved in that kind of thing. It’s definitely an experience that most people don’t get to have.
“I’m very thankful that I get to have that.”
On her travels, Granger has seen places where education did not come as a guarantee for children.
“We have brought children and helped teach them,” Granger said. “We teach them what it means to be a Catholic and about God, and how much he loves them. We give them nice books to read and things like that.”
Granger does not take her own education or school for granted.
“Seventh Ward is an amazing school,” Granger said. “We have awesome teachers. We have awesome classes. I think I am incredibly fortunate to be able to represent Seventh Ward and to be able to go to a Louisiana public school.
“We have an awesome, friendly community here at Seventh Ward.”
Seventh Ward Principal Marlene Primeaux said the school community couldn’t be happier to have Granger.
“She is very deserving,” Primeaux said of Granger’s award. “She is wise beyond her years. Even though she and her family do all these amazing things, she is very humble about her experiences.”
Granger’s next experience regarding Student of the Year will find her in the regional round.
“I am proud to represent the parish,” Granger said. “I can tell people how awesome our community is here and what an awesome school I attend.”

Family members joined Rene Rost’s Isabella Hargrave after the announcement that she is the Vermilion Parish Middle School Student of the Year.

Rene Rost's Isabella Hargrave named Vermilion Parish Middle School Student of the Year

KAPLAN — There is a pride in Kaplan schools that stems from what students there accomplish.
Isabella Hargrave is a perfect example.
Hargrave, an 8th-grader at Rene Rost Middle School, is an excellent student in the classroom and active across many levels of the school. That’s part of why Hargrave has been named the Vermilion Parish Middle School Student of the Year.
“Becoming Vermillion Parish Student of the Year is such an honor!” Hargrave exclaimed. “My initial reaction was definitely surprising. It is a crazy concept to think that I am one of the top students in the entire parish. It wasn’t until after that I started to understand how significant of an honor this position is.
“I couldn’t be more grateful to represent my parish, school, and community.”
While there was some pleasant shock with the announcement, Hargrave prepared for the process and allowed her personality to shine through.
“My creativity and bubbly personality have definitely helped me a lot throughout this process,” Hargrave said. “Being able to think outside the box and think of new fun ideas has really put me in the lead when it comes to portfolios and interviews. I have learned to use the skills that I have to set me ahead, allowing me to succeed so far.”
Hargrave has found tremendous success and enjoyment in her activities, both inside and outside of school.
“One of the main activities I do out of school is dance,” Hargrave said. “Dance is one 100% my favorite thing to do. Expressing myself through music and challenging my body with different dance styles brings me much joy. I also love cheer because it allows me to connect with others in my school and shows my true personality. Both cheer and dance have allowed me to form friendships with different girls around my community who are so strong I truly consider them family. I also take part in some school clubs. These include things like student council, 4-H, Beta, Vermilion gifted program, band, theater, and I have recently joined a future city team that I will compete in an engineering contest around mid-January.”
Hargrave has hobbies, too.
“A couple of my favorite hobbies include art and baking,” Hargrave said. “These two activities show a different side of my personality that is fun but calm and more introverted. I love that rewarding feeling after I have baked a delicious cake or painted an outstanding image. Camping and being outdoors are also things I enjoy. My family and I camp with other families with kids around the same age. This little camping community started in 2010, the year I was born, so I have indeed grown up with all of these friends and they have become more of a family. I also have many great memories while camping, such as learning to ride a bike or exploring new trails. These are a few of my favorite hobbies that bring me joy.”
Regarding the classroom, Hargrave said her favorite subject would be English Language Arts (ELA).
“I am a big reader, and my favorite type of books are adventure books with supernatural characters,” Hargrave said. “ELA also includes lots of writing tasks, which is another way for me to think outside the box and come up with fun and exciting stories.”
Her current ELA teacher, Caroline Guidry, has also contributed to Hargave’s love for the subject.
“I love her teaching style because of all the fun art projects that she includes in our lessons,” Hargrave said. “This keeps the class fun and helps me to stay engaged and learn more.”
Hargrave doesn’t have to look far for her biggest influence. That would be her mother, Tracy Hargrave.
“My mom has been the biggest influence on my life and personality,” Hargrave said. “She constantly pushes me to be the best person I can be and is my number one supporter. She is always proud of my accomplishments but also tells me how to improve. While some parents just comfort their kids when they make a mistake, my mom comforts me but at the same time teaches me how to learn from it and work through the problem. She sets a wonderful example of how to treat others, succeed at a job, and work hard.
“I strive to be as successful as her every day in every action I take.”
Tracy Hargrave, who is the principal at Kaplan Elementary School, said she is proud of everything Isabella has accomplished.
“Izzy is determined, smart, and selfless,” Tracy Hargrave said of what she sees in her daughter. “When she puts her mind to something, nothing can get in her way. She is hard-working and doesn’t settle for less than her best. She often puts others before herself. She is kind and thinks of others when making decisions. We are so proud of these qualities!”
Isabella Hargrave isn’t the only student generating pride in the Kaplan community. Kaplan High’s Reagan Smith is the Vermilion Parish High School Student of the Year. Isabella Hargrave said it is gratifying to be a part of something special.
“The student of the Year is such a great representation of their town and this applies to Kaplan as well,” Hargrave said. “The past students of the year have gotten the chance to compete at a state level, and even though some of them were younger than me, I still look up to those individuals as a great role models. They really showed the amazing kids and people who grew up in Kaplan. Regardless of the outcome, I want to continue that legacy and make my community proud.
“I am so proud to have the opportunity to represent Kaplan positively and I will try my very best to fill the big shoes left by the students before me!”

Kaplan High’s Reagan Smith named Vermilion Parish Student of the Year

KAPLAN — Kaplan High’s Reagan Smith already felt overwhelmingly honored after being named her school’s Student of the Year.
“There were so many students who were more than qualified to get it,” Smith said of her classmates.
That feeling is now multiplied after the Vermilion Parish School System announced that Smith is the Vermilion Parish High School Student of the Year.
“It’s already a large enough honor as it is to have my name next to the top students in the parish,” Smith said of the award. “I couldn’t be more grateful to be able to represent Vermilion Parish at the next level.”
Smith is involved at almost every level at Kaplan High. A 4.0 student, Smith has been class president for four years. She is a member of the Beta Club and plays three sports, including basketball, softball and track and field.
“She’s an excellent choice,” Kaplan High Principal Shay Herpin said. “She’s a leader. I think that’s what sets her apart. She does a lot in the community and represents Kaplan High School well.
“We’re proud of her.”
While her time at Kaplan High is not yet over, Smith has thought about plans for after graduation. That includes the possibility of majoring in biology, with a minor in kinesiology, at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.
“I want to be an orthopedic surgeon,” Smith said. “It’s always been about the medical field, since I was a kid.”
Some personal experiences have only driven Smith closer to that goal.
“I had some injuries with softball,” Smith said. “Having gone through that made me really want to help others.”
Her family, including parents, Ashley and Wendy, and her brother, Gannon, have also greatly impacted Smith.
“They are tremendous inspirations,” Smith said.
Smith is certainly an inspiration to others, not only at her school, but around the parish. She is proud to represent both as she goes on to the state level.
“I’m looking forward to spreading a message of perseverance and succeeding through adversity as I continue,” Smith said. “I’m so thankful for everyone who helped me through the process!”
