Francis Touchet, a Kaplan High graduate, is now the superintendent of Lafayette Parish schools.

Vermilion Parish's own Francis Touchet named superintendent of Lafayette Parish schools

(Courtesy of the Advocate Newspaper)

Lafayette Parish Interim Superintendent Francis Touchet Jr. has been selected by the school board to serve as the next superintendent of the district.
The Lafayette Parish School Board voted unanimously Thursday to move Touchet to the permanent position. He has served in the interim role since July after former Superintendent Irma Trosclair resigned.
“I want to thank the board for their vote of confidence, but more importantly for the vote of confidence in our team,” Touchet said. “We will strive to continue to always put students first, and we will always make sure that our employees are in the best hands in doing so.”
Touchet was the only applicant for the superintendent position.
Touchet is a Kaplan High graduate, played football for USL and then taught in Vermilion Parish Schools. He was also a principal at Erath High School.
The position was advertised as required by law and as requested by school board members, according to Board Attorney Robert Hammonds.

“Mr. (Tommy) Angelle, Mr. (Justin) Centanni and I actually personally visited the post office and opened the P.O. box,” Hammonds said. “We double checked at the desk to make sure that the one application that was contained therein was in fact the only application. That application was submitted by your interim superintendent, who is eminently qualified to serve as a superintendent in the state of Louisiana.”
Hammonds said the board could either make a motion to select Touchet as the next superintendent or “do something else in this process as it moves forward.”
Britt Latiolais, who represents District 5, made a motion to select Touchet, pending any contract negotiations. The school board did not discuss the matter further, and there was no public comment on the topic.

Amanda Blanco, spokesperson for the Lafayette Parish School System, said the position was posted on the school system’s website and advertised from Aug. 6 to Aug. 20 in The Daily Advertiser, The Acadiana Advocate, The Baton Rouge Advocate and The New Orleans Advocate. Blanco said the position may have also been posted to job boards, but she did not have a definite answer before this story’s publication deadline. This recruitment process was the same as that used to recruit for the previous superintendent, Blanco said.

Touchet served as the associate Lafayette Parish superintendent, focusing on district accountability and academic support. He joined the district in July 2019.

He has been an educator for more than 30 years, according to his application. He started his career as a science teacher and football and track coach in Vermilion Parish. He moved into administrative roles in 1998. He served as assistant principal and principal in the parish, including serving as the principal of Erath High School for five years. While he was principal, the school was one of the state’s top-performing high schools.
He moved to the Louisiana Department of Education in 2012 as a network leader who worked with more than 40 school districts throughout the state on district-wide initiatives.
When the board voted to search for a new superintendent, they debated whether that decision should be left to them or passed on to the newly elected board, which will be seated in January.

Big plays lift Vikings past North Vermilion

LEROY — Northside High used an explosive offense to claim a 42-15 win at North Vermilion on Friday, finishing with seven plays of greater than 20 yards and another 11 plays gaining 10 yards or more.
“We knew coming into it that they were a big-play team on offense,” North Vermilion coach Joe Heintz said. “We felt like if we had to make them drive, it was going to be hard for them. They did it a couple of times, but they’re a big-play team.”
Penalties hurt both teams as the officials littered the field with 26 flags totaling 222 yards in infractions. Northside was penalized 15 times for 95 yards, while North Vermilion was whistled for 127 yards on 11 penalties.
Northside’s also fumbled the ball six times, with North Vermilion recovering three. An interception by North Vermilion’s James Higginbotham was wiped out by a roughing the passer penalty. NVHS lost one of its two fumbles.
The game was close early on, with quarterback Jamarion Ardoin scoring on an 11-yard keeper and Ja’Nathan Bonnet tacking on the 2-point conversion for the Vikings before North Vermilion answered with a 52-yard touchdown run from Grant Wise and the 2-point run by Tucker Denais that made it 8-8 with 2:08 left in the first quarter.
But Northside came back with a 10-yard TD pass from Ardoin to Garran Hypolite to lead 16-8 after one quarter following the 2-point conversion, then got a 34-yard TD catch from Cameron Gotch in the second-quarter for a 22-8 lead at halftime.
The Patriots lost middle linebacker Noah Stelly to a dislocated shoulder on the first play from scrimmage, which didn’t help North Vermilion.
“Guys stepped up, but when you lose your leader on defense, it’s tough,” Heintz said.
Ardoin finished the night with 87 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries and completed 13 of 16 pass attempts for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Gotch had eight receptions for 131 yards and two TDs.
A five-yard TD from Keagan Dugas made it 28-8 after three quarters, and Bonnet scored on runs of 47 and 49 yards on consecutive possessions to push the lead to 42-8 with 7:26 remaining in the game. Bonnet finished with 121 yards on 11 carries, scoring two touchdowns and three 2-point conversions.
An exchange of fumbles led to North Vermilion’s final score. The Patriots got inside the Northside 25 on a late possession before fumbling the ball away. Two plays later, however, the Vikings coughed it up and Preston Bagwell recovered for North Vermilion, returning the fumble to the 6.
Tucker Denais scored on the next snap and Jacob Lattier kicked the PAT to make it a 42-15 final.
Denais led the Patriots with 66 yards on 15 carries. Wise had 50 yards on four rushes.
Heintz said defensive end Myles Johnson played well.
“It was tough sledding tonight on both sides of the ball,” Heintz said. “I thought Myles did a good job defensively. He always does.::
Things don’t get easier the last two weeks for the Patriots, who fell to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in District 4-4A. North Vermilion travels to Lafayette Christian on Friday, then finishes at home against Teurlings Catholic.
“We’ve just got to show up Monday and get back to it,” Heintz said. ‘
“We know it’s a tough road the last two games. At the end of the day, it’s a tough district that we play in.”

Kaplan head coach Cory Brodie talks to his team.

Kaplan gets big win over St. Martinville in front of homecoming crowd

Pirates now in first in district at 3-0

Leading up to the St. Martinville contest, Kaplan fans were questioning why they were playing St. Martinville for homecoming.
However, Kaplan head coach Cory Brodie knew his team always gets motivated to play a homecoming game, which was just what the Pirates needed to battle the St. Martinville Tigers this past Friday.
In an entertaining game for the homecoming crowd, the Pirates pulled off a minor upset, 36-32.
This win puts the Pirates in the driver’s seat of winning the district championship, with only one district game left to play. Kaplan is currently 3-0 in the district and will be facing Church Point (5-3) on the road in a non-district game.
Meanwhile, the Abbeville Wildcats (6-2) are 2-0 in the district and will be traveling to St. Martinville (2-6, 1-1) on Friday.
AHS and Kaplan end the regular season, playing against each other.
“It feels good,” said KHS head coach Cory Brodie about the win. “We got behind and had to find a way to win.”
The game was a back-and-forth one, with Kaplan leading 15-6 at the 3:47 mark in the second period.
Daylon Landry, Kaplan’s running back, scored the Pirates’ first two touchdowns with a 9-yard TD run and a 2-yard TD run.
Landry had a career game, finishing with 226 yards rushing on 34 carries, and he scored four times. Landry’s teammate, Jed Devoltz, also successfully ran the ball with 23 carries for 136 yards. At halftime, Kaplan was ahead 15-12.
Although St. Martinville went ahead 18-15 in the third quarter, Kaplan stormed back and led 29-25 with 4:29 to go in the game.
However, the Tigers did not quit and went with a halfback pass that covered 76 yards and put St. Martinville ahead 32-29 with just over three minutes to play in the game.
This time, Kaplan would answer the call with the game on the line. Landry scored on a 24-yard run with 50 seconds to play in the game, sending the Kaplan homecoming crowd into a celebration.
Kaplan defensive end Remy Broussard shut the door on St. Martinville by recovering a fumble with 25 seconds left in the game.
Kaplan kicker Gannon Smith went 4-for-4 kicking extra points, which was the difference in the game.
St. Martinville quarterback Kaden Zenon did his best to keep his team in the game, with nine carries for 97 yards and a score. He also completed 13-out-of-17 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns.

Abbeville able to beat Erath with help of defense

Freshman comes through for Wildcats

On Friday, during a match between the Abbeville Wildcats and the Erath Bobcats, a 5-foot tall freshman defensive back named Joseph Davis made the biggest play of his young life.
He took the ball from an Erath receiver’s hands deep in the endzone with 11 minutes to play, preventing Erath from scoring and possibly tying the game. This gave Abbeville the football and a ton of momentum on offense. As a result, Abbeville drove 80 yards in five minutes and scored, securing a huge district 20-12 win. Abbeville’s overall record improves to 6-2, while Erath’s falls to 1-7.
Davis, who is a full-time starter on the junior varsity team, said he and a teammate switched coverage and began guarding EHS receiver Cameron Soirez, who was running in the corner of the endzone.
“I went up and took the ball from him,” said Davis. “It was a big play.”
Davis worked his way up into the starting lineup because he plays on the junior varsity team and played varsity sparingly at the beginning of the season.
Abbeville head coach Roderick Moy praised Davis, saying, “He is a great tackler and someone we can count on. He is never too good to play junior varsity. He has played every JV game every Wednesday and started for us on Friday night. He is so unselfish. He gets his butt chewed weekly for his mistakes, but he takes it. Then he comes out and makes huge plays for us.”
According to Moy, the AHS defense helped win the game against Erath.
Davis’s interception was undoubtedly a game-changer and a testament to his skills on the field. Ending any chances of EHS making a comeback was defensive back Tajh Judge to secure the victory.
Moy said the AHS defense played a crucial role in securing the win, keeping the Wildcats in the game while the offense stepped up when it mattered most.
After Davis’ interception, Abbeville started its possession at the 20-yard line with just over 10 minutes left in the game. Moy’s objective was for the team to score a touchdown and take time off the clock.
During the drive, Zaylun Williams, a linebacker playing fullback, made a crucial play. Known as the “Enforcer,” Williams carried the ball up the middle and for a 37-yard run to the EHS 13-yard line. Two plays later, Justin Montgomery scored the security touchdown.
Throughout the game, the Wildcats relied on running the ball, while the Bobcats successfully passed it. EHS sophomore quarterback Jack Landry attempted to pick apart the AHS defense, completing 9 out of 13 passes for 92 yards in the first half and ending the game with 15 out of 25 passes for 146 yards.
Abbeville started strong by marching 80 yards in five plays, scoring on their second possession of the game. The longest play was a 65-yard run up the middle by TeZarron Stewert. Edmar Simon III scored a five-yard run for a 6-0 lead.
The Bobcats responded on their next drive by marching 60 yards on three passing plays and three runs by Landon LeMaire, covering a total of 14 yards. Jack Landry completed a nine-yard TD pass to Christian Pillette with 11 minutes left in the first half.
Abbeville’s defense stopped the two-point conversion, keeping the game tied at 6-all.
Abbeville took the lead on an 12-yard run from quarterback DaZavien Maze with 7:15 left to play in the first half. They finished the half with a 12-6 lead.
Abbeville travels to St. Martinville next Friday, while Erath is home against Crowley.

Keith Dain Sellers Jr. was charged three times and his bond total is $37,500.

North Vermilion parent allegedly hits school resource officer with hIs vehicle

A man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly hitting a school resource officer (SRO) with his vehicle and then threatening to fight him after dropping off his child at North Vermilion High School.
Keith Dain Sellers Jr., 37, was charged with aggravated battery, threatening a public official, and failure to obey police officers and traffic signals.
The Vermilion Parish Special Response Team arrested him at his house without any incident.
The SRO was directing traffic in the student drop-off area when the incident occurred.
He instructed the driver of a tan Toyota to turn west instead of turning east from the westbound line. However, the driver became irate and ignored him. When the SRO tried to direct the driver, the car hit the SRO, forcing him onto the car’s hood. The driver then stopped, turned around, and drove off while cursing the SRO and threatening him with bodily harm.
Fortunately, the SRO was not injured, and the Vermilion Parish School Board provided a video that documented the incident and assisted in the investigation. Sellers remained in the Vermilion Parish jail on Thursday afternoon, with a bond set on three of the charges totaling $37,500, but with no bond set on three other charges.
