Turnovers hurt Gueydan in loss to Delcambre

DELCAMBRE – The turnover bug reared its ugly head and bit Gueydan’s Bears, seeking a 2-0 start under head coach Roderick Moy, Friday night in an away game against the Delcambre Panthers.
Two lost fumbles and two interceptions proved costly against a ground-and-pound Delcambre team that took advantage of the turnovers for a 26-6 victory over the Bears.
After forging a 6-6 tie early in the first quarter on a 39-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Zachary Guidry to senior running back Dominic Touchet, Gueydan’s rebuilding team drove from the GHS 40 to the DHS 1 before losing a fumble that was recovered by Delcambre’s Rogan Saunier.
The Bears’ defense stopped Delcambre on the ensuing possession and the offense set up shop at the DHS 33. Three plays later, Delcambre’s Ian Evans picked off Guidry near the goal line and returned it to the DHS 34.
It was the second interception of the night for the Panthers. DHS senior defensive back Nate Picard intercepted a Guidry pass on second-and-5 at the GHS 43 midway through the first quarter and brought it back to the DHS 34.
Gueydan opened the second half with a 67-yard gallop up the middle by senior running back Lane Breaux, who raced all the way to the DHS 10. Three plays later, with the Bears threatening at the DHS 4, DHS senior defensive back Scott Duhon scooped up another lost fumble and returned it 38 yards to the DHS 42.
The Panthers cashed in on that turnover eight plays later when the game’s leading rusher, Parker Nunez, a senior running back, scored the second of his three rushing touchdowns on a 2-yard run, going in standing up to make it 13-6 before the PAT kick sailed wide.
Delcambre added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to seal the verdict.
“When we were able to stop them on their first possession of the second half and we turned that into a touchdown, that’s when our guys started to believe,” DHS head coach Artie Liuzza III said after the game.
Liuzza said Delcambre coaches and players made adjustments at intermission to slow down Gueydan’s rushing attack led by Lane Breaux, who finished with 125 yards on 13 carries for the Bears.
Nunez led all ballcarriers with 228 yards on 17 carries. He reeled off long runs of 72 yards for the game’s first touchdown in the first half and 59 yards for the game’s last touchdown with 7:59 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Guidry completed 7 of 19 passes for 110 yards.
Last week, Gueydan shaved Sci Academy, 14-13, at home to win its opener while Delcambre dropped a 26-14 decision to Westminster Academy in its first game in Opelousas.
Delcambre plays at Centerville while Gueydan plays host to Jeanerette on Friday.

Kaplan's Hayes Abshire (7) avoids North Vermilion defenders. Abshire had a season high 157 yards against North Vermilion.

Kaplan runs over North Vermilion

Pirates rush for 375 yards

KAPLAN – Two old district rivals met in an early season contest Friday as the North Vermilion Patriots traveled to Kaplan for an early season Vermilion Parish matchup. And when the dust settled it was the home team that played smash mouth Pirate football and claimed the 32-7 non-district win.
The Pirates improved their record to 2-0 and will take on Church Point next Friday. North Vermilion fell to 1-1 and will travel to Youngsville next Friday to take on the 2-0 Ascension Episcopal Gators.
Friday night’s contest came down to the Pirates executing very methodically on offense and used a bend but don’t break defense to control the contest.
“I think we definitely got better from week one to week two” said Pirate Head Coach Stephen Lotief. We did a good job on the offensive line and defensively we were able to make plays when we needed them.”
Kaplan did exactly that as in the contest they converted on five 4th down conversions and kept the Patriot offense out the endzone all night despite allowing three trips into the red zone. The visitors from Leroy did not help their cause as they had 13 penalties for 125 yards, along with mishandled snaps and dropped passes in the red zone that had them playing behind the sticks on many drives.
“You can’t make that many mistakes against a quality program like Kaplan and think you will stay in the game. I thought we did some good things on defense at times tonight, but offensively we just failed to execute and finish any drives” said Patriot mentor Brett Blakey.
NV opened the game with an on-side kick, but the Pirates defense stepped up to the challenge and force a punt. Kaplan’s run game started early as Drake Lejeune broke off a 45 yard early on to get the Pirates down the field. NV, however, was able to step up and stop the Pirates at the 20-yard line to keep the game scoreless.
After a defensive stop, Kaplan struck first with a Hayes Abshire 67-yard touchdown off left tackle with 3:03 remaining in the first for the first score. Kevin White’s two point conversion made it 8-0. North Vermilion answered on the ensuing kickoff when Kendrick Baudion took the kick and went 81 yards untouched to the endzone. A Patrick Chapman PAT made it 8-7. Kaplan’s next drive remained the same as Lejeune, White and Abshire took turns in the Pirate Wing T and White finished off the drive with a 3 yard run. A missed two point run kept the score at 14-7.
North Vermilion’s next drive was their best of the night as they drove from the 13 yard line all the way down to the Pirate 15 looking to tie the score. But on the next three plays, a holding penalty, dropped pass and a great Pirate pass break up at the goal line forced the Patriots to stall their drive. Kaplan threatened just before half, but a Dylan Naquin interception at the four yard line kept the score at 14-7 at the half.
The Patriots looked to try and get back in it to start the second half with a kick return to the Kaplan 40 from Benny Freeman. But again, the Patriot drive stalled by their own doing as back to back runs set up a 3rd and 2. The next play, however, a snap sailed over the head of the quarterback Darius Gilliam and that was compounded by a block in the back penalty turning any threat into another stop for the Pirate Defense.
From that point on, it was Kaplan Pirate football at it’s finest as they marched the ball three and four yards at a time and methodically moved the ball down the field. Scores from Mason Frick and Abshire put the Pirates in complete control 26-7 lead with 7 minutes left in the game. Kaplan added a late score with a minute to go for the 32-7 final.
Abshire led the ground attack with unofficial rushing totals of 21 carries for 157 yards. Lejeune added 133 yards of his own on 13 carries.
For the Patriots, Gilliam led the ground attack with 59 yards on 15 carries. He added 38 yards through the air. Baudoin ended the game with 40 yards rushing.
“We did a good job of making plays and adjusting to what North Vermilion was trying to do. This is a good win for this team” added Lotief.

Opelousas Catholic hands loss to VC

After getting a big win the week before against Catholic High of New Iberia, the Vermilion Catholic Eagles were handed a 33-21 loss to Opelousas Catholic on Friday.
Despite outgaining OC, 480 yards to 327 yards, Opelousas Catholic’s offense gave VC’s smaller defense fits.
Opelousas Catholic quarterback Jessie Roy had success throwing the football, completing 21-out-of-30 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns.
VC quarterback Drew Lege did not have a bad night. He completed 32 out of 50 passes for 365 yards and two touchdowns.
The difference in the game was when OC needed to score, it did.
The Eagles tied it 21-21 in the first six minutes of the third period, but OC came storming back and scored the next 14 points to secure the win.
VC head coach Kevin Fouquier was not surprised by how well OC played.
“It is always a battle every time we play them,” said Fouquier. “They are a good football team. They have good athletes. Their quarterback ran their offense well. Their receivers were good athletes.”
The Eagles beat OC last year in Opelousas. However, Roy was sick and missed the game. On Friday, his two favorite targets were Keon Coleman and Ronal Patin. The two combined to catch 14 passes for 171 yards. Coleman had eight catches for 131 yards and scored twice.
The Eagles took their opening drive in the game and marched 80 yards in 10 plays. Lege threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to John Robert Allums seven minutes into the game.
The Eagles came out swinging in the first quarter and scored on its first drive, but the Vikings got back up off the ground and scored on their opening possession to tie it, 7-7.
The big play in the first half turned out to be a questionable call by the referees. VC’s defense was able to stop the Vikings and force a punt. On the punt, the Eagles got the ball but then had to give it right back to the Vikings. The Eagles were called for blocking in the back on the punt.
Opelousas Catholic got the ball back, and the penalty gave the Vikings a first down. Three plays later OC scored a touchdown and went ahead 14-7.
Down 21-7, the Eagles had a chance to cut the lead to seven by marching down to the OC 6-yard-line with 25 seconds to play in the first half. In four plays, they could not score.
In the second half, VC got back in the game in the third period by scoring 14 points. On a fourth-down, VC punter Andrew Marceaux faked the punt and threw a 19-yard pass to Andrew Derouen to keep the drive alive.
A few plays later, Andre LeBlanc had a 35-yard run. Jacques Touchet scored from the 5-yard line, and VC was back in the game.
VC’s defense came through in a big way by forcing a fumble on OC’s next possession. Camden Sellers sacked the quarterback, and the football came loose. Alex Sanders fell on the ball, and VC took up shop at the OC 30-yard line.
Three plays later, Lege threw a pass to Sellers for a 13-yard touchdown. Allums nailed the extra point, and the game was tied 21-21.
VC linebacker Jacques Touchet led the defense with 14 total tackles.
