Grace Landry holds a hand written letter she wrote to the administration of J.H. Williams Middle School, thanking them for a great three years at the school. Landry cried the last week not to leave JHW for AHS.

Rare Thank You: 13-year-old writes letter to J.H. Williams Middle thanking everyone for her 3 years at school

Before leaving J.H. Williams Middle School (JHW) for Abbeville High School, Grace Landry,13, cried because she did not want to leave the school. The final week of school, she wrote the school a letter and expressed her feelings about the last three years at the school. Here is a copy of the letter. She is the daughter of Stacy and Angela Landry.

To: The administration of JHW (& Officer Reggie)
This letter is going to be really hard for me to write because I really don’t want to leave JHW at all. It really upsets me when people don’t like JHW, because I wouldn’t trade my school for the world. Everything about JHW just makes me so happy. I love how much the teachers and administration care about all of their students, and it makes JHW feel like a second home to me. I can remember back in 6th grade, 3 years ago, my mom asked me if I wanted to switch to Erath. I told her “never.” There’s just something about it that makes me smile, from being told “Good Morning” or “Hello” every time I walk through the door. I am forever grateful.
I was terrified when I started 6th grade, which feels like forever ago. I thought I wouldn’t fit in or that I would get lost, but you all showed me how to make my time the best. From all the mid-class conversations to the assemblies every Friday, I just could not get enough of JHW. By the end of 6th grade, I was attached to the teachers, the classes, the atmosphere, I knew that I would love every year I spent here. I was right.
You have giving me so many opportunities and you are really the whole reason I have come out of my shell so much. Really and truly, if I had gone to any other school, I wouldn’t have gotten Student of the Year. I would still be a quiet, shy girl, like I was when I first came. I am so glad that I got to this point, because I’m a better person now and wherever I get in life, it will be because of JHW.
It hurts to have to move on, it really does, because like I said, this place is like my home. I was already crying at the award ceremony, and I don’t usually cry. But leaving here is a reason to cry. I promise to come and visit every opportunity I get. You have done so much for me.
Thank you, for everything.
Your Student,
Grace Landry

Kiley Naomi, a 2018 North Vermilion graduate, holds up her pistols to show that she is now an Oklahoma State Cowgirl. Naomi, 19, and the Cowgirls will play Thursday at 6 on ESPN 2. Oklahoma State plays Florida.

North Vermilion graduate lives dream by playing in 2019 College World Series

Two short years ago, Kiley Naomi was playing in the finals of the LHSAA Class 3A softball state championship. Today, she now finds herself starting for Oklahoma State and playing in the 2019 Women’s College World Series with a chance to win a national title.
She is a 19-year-old true freshman.
“Honestly, it is like a dream come true,” said Naomi about playing the World Series. “It is everything I ever dreamed of. I have been watching the World Series my entire life, and now I am able to be playing in it.”
Little did she know two years ago, she would be playing in front of a few thousand people today. Playing on the big stage in the Class 3A finals has prepared her for this weekend.
“Playing in the state finals was a big experience and being able to play in front of that many people prepared me for this situation,” she said. “The fans in the Super Regional against Florida State were really loud. I know that being in the World Series is going to be louder.
“But since I have played in front of big crowds before, I think I will be OK.”
Naomi has been the starting shortstop for the Cowgirls all season. Tonight No. 13 Oklahoma State plays against No. 4 Florida, starting at 6 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN 2.
She is one of only five players who started all 59 games for the Cowgirls. She has a .269 batting average and knocked in 18 runs and hit six home runs. She has also reached base safely in 47 out of the 59 games.
Oklahoma State is making an appearance in the College World Series for the first time since 2011. It is the school’s eighth overall appearance in the World Series.
“This team is special because I know that each of these girls has my back no matter what,” she said. “We have a saying, ‘for the girls.’ That is what our motto has been all season. We have created our destiny when no one else believed we would have made it this far.”
Only eight teams are remaining and the Cowgirls are the lowest ranked team at No. 13. The winner of Thursday’s game meets the winner of No. 1 Oklahoma / No. 8 Alabama game on Friday. The loser of Thursday’s game plays Saturday.
The Cowgirls arrived in Stillwater Tuesday and attended a banquet that night. Over the last three days, Naomi has been receiving phone calls and texts from friends, including her former North Vermilion head softball coach Joy LeBlanc. LeBlanc played and coached in the World Series.
She texted Naomi and congratulated her and told her to “Soak in all the memories and enjoy the ride.”
Naomi is the second North Vermilion graduate to play in the World Series. Vallie Gaspard played for the Lady Cajuns in the 2008 World Series.

Standing by the new sign that was placed near the downtown bridge on Tuesday are Gerald Gaspard of the American Legion, Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza, Tom Thompson, commander of the American Legion, Charles Dill, of the American Legion, and Abbeville councilman Francis Plaisance.

Project complete: 80 years later, memorial signs placed near bridge

Some 80 years later, two new memorial signs now stand tall at the Memorial Downtown Bridge in Abbeville.
On Tuesday, the State Department of Transportation and Development placed two aluminum signs that read “Vermilion Parish Veterans Memorial Bridge, ‘To Those Who Died That Liberty Might Live’” near the front of the bridge.
The signs were paid for by Post 29 and donations. When the signs were hung, it meant the end to a long absence.
“The signs look good,” said Gerald Hebert, a member of the American Legion Post 29.
Around 1938 an iron plaque was placed on the downtown bridge. The downtown bridge was dedicated to the 32 Vermilion Parish men who died in World War I.
The iron plaque, however, was taken down around 1940 when the United States entered World War II. The government needed the iron and ordered all iron plaques removed from all bridges.
After World War II ended, the plaques on all state bridges were never replaced.
Two years ago the American Legion Post 29 came across the removal of the plaque in its search for information to help celebrate its 100th anniversary.
What better way to celebrate the 100th anniversary than too replace the plaque that was removed 80 years ago, thought the American Legion Post 29.
On Monday, for Veterans Day, a special ceremony was held at Magdalen Square to unveil the signs.
Post 29 Commander Tom Thompson was thrilled to see that the ceremony was a success and the signs were placed on the Memorial Bridge downtown.
“This has been a project of love,” said Thompson. “When this came up to do this project, there was no question.”
Then Senator Johnathan Perry got a bill approved by the Louisiana Legislator to have the signs placed by the bridge.
Perry, who was at the ceremony on Monday, told the crowd that this is probably one of the most, if not the most, important bill to get approved in his tenure as a state senator.

Dream Teachers’ Amie Burton presents Abbeville High’s Shane Theall with a gift for being named as semifinalist for State Teacher of the year. Abbeville High Principal Lyndelle Theriot (right) said the school is proud of Theall.

Abbeville High’s Shane Theall named State Teacher of the Year semifinalist

Abbeville High sent its graduates off into a bright future last Friday night.
Earlier in the week, one of the people who helped shape many of those futures received some well deserved recognition.
Shane Theall is one of the semifinalists for State Teacher of the Year. Amie Burton, Chairman of the Board of Dream Teachers, the organization that conducts the award, presented Theall, who teaches agriculture, welding and carpentry, with a gift honoring him as a semifinalist.
Theall, who earned Vermilion Parish High School Teacher of the Year, said, while it is definitely an honor, this is just a result of coming to work every day and doing the best job that he can and remaining focused on what matters most.
“We don’t do our job for recognition,” Theall said. “We do this for the children.”
Burton said that is admirable, which makes it nice to be able to honor teachers like Theall.
“This is such an honor,” Burton said while presenting Theall with a gift basket in his classroom. “Teachers work extremely hard and don’t always get the recognition that they deserve.”
Abbeville High Principal Lyndelle Theriot said Theall is deserving of every bit of recognition he receives.
“He’s an outstanding teacher and we are so proud to have him,” Theriot said.
Theall is himself an Abbeville High graduate, adding to what this means for the school.
“This does mean a lot for Abbeville High School,” Theriot said. “These kind of things show what this school is all about.
“It shows that Abbeville High prepares you, and Shane is preparing kids for their futures.”
That is the message Vermilion Parish Superintendent Jerome Puyau passed on to the students in Theall’s class last Wednesday morning.
“You may think right now that you won’t remember Mr. Theall,” Puyau told the students. “You will remember him. He’s teaching you skills that you will be using for the rest of your life.
“He’s a great teacher.”
Theall will be among 48 semifinalists, including teachers and principals, who will attend a luncheon on Thursday, May 23, at the Louisiana Governor’s Mansion. During the event, the finalists for Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year will be announced. The winners will be announced during a ceremony on July 19.
That he has made it this far, Theall said he is going to work hard to bring the award home to Abbeville High.
“I am going to put forth the best product I can to try to win,” Theall said, “because I was chosen. I want to do this for Vermilion Parish, the school and the students. Either way, I am going to keep working hard on our goal of educating students so that they can become productive citizens.
“That’s always our focus.”
