Vermilion Parish residents will have to bag their own sand.

Sand bags are available in Vermilion Parish

Sandbags are now available in Vermilion Parish.
Every person will be required to fill their bag.
The Vermilion Parish Police Jury has sand available at its area barns throughout the parish.

Erath
In Erath, sand is available at the police jury barn on 13115 Mack Switch Road (937-5668).
There is also sand available in front of Erath City Hall. It would be best if you bagged your sand.

Gueydan

In Gueydan, sand is located at the parish barn at 29429 Veterans Memorial Drive (596-6930).

Alleged murderer, Aaron Carter, thought he was leaving jail after paying bond

Alleged Gremlin gang member Aaron Carter thought he was about to leave the Vermilion Parish jail after posting a reduced bond of $25,000 for allegedly murdering an Abbeville teen in 2018.
Instead of becoming a free man after posting the bond, Carter was held in the parish jail and arrested by the Rayne police for a murder he is accused of committing in 2015.
The police first arrested Carter in 2015 for the alleged killing of Christopher Trent of Rayne. Trent, who was 32 years old at the time of his death, was shot multiple times in March of 2015.

Abbeville native Clayton Rachalla serves aboard USS Thomas Hurdner

ATLANTIC OCEAN - A 2018 Abbeville High School graduate and native of Abbeville, Louisiana, is serving aboard USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116), a guided-missile destroyer, currently conducting operations in the Atlantic Ocean.
Seaman Apprentice Clayton E. Rachalla is part of the aviation team responsible for assisting helicopters in taking off and landing on the ship.
“I help with on loading and offloading supplies,” Rachalla said. “Without me, the helicopters can’t land or take off from the flight deck.”

Vermilion Parish School Board votes 8-0 to name Tommy Byler the new superintendent

The Vermilion Parish School Board voted 8-0 to name North Vermilion Principal Tommy Byler as the new superintendent.
Byler beat out interim superintendent Brad Prudhomme and assistant superintendent Paul Hebert.
The school board also named Byler as the interim superintendent until he and the school board agree on Byler’s contract.
During the interview process on Monday, school board member Dale Stelly asked Byler and the other two candidates why they wanted to be the new superintendent with the COVID-19 problems.

All Vermilion Parish libraries closed due to COVID19 quarantine of employees

Due to the number of Vermilion Parish Library employees quarantined for COVID 19, the library will be closed from Tuesday, Aug. 4 through Monday, Aug. 17.
All branches will re-open on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at their regularly scheduled hours. Branches will only open for curbside pickup and drive-thru in Abbeville.
According to a spokesperson for the library, “No one on staff at any branch of the Vermilion Parish Library has tested positive for COVID 19, we are closing to quarantine for 14 days due to possible exposure.”
