Qualifying for Oct. 14 elections ends with two local races, one unopposed

Qualifying for the Oct. 14 election wrapped up Friday afternoon, leaving two special elections in the parish with races, while another had one candidate go unopposed.
Sherry Howell went unopposed in the opening for Maurice Board of Alderman.
Sherry Howell has served on the board on an interim basis since February. She stepped into the role after her husband, former Alderman Lynn Howell, passed away in January. She will serve the remaining year of Lynn Howell’s term. Maurice will hold regular elections in the fall of 2018.
A special election must be held when more than six months remain on an unexpired term. That resulted in two other spots being open in the parish for the Oct. 14 election.
Nathan Granger stepped down from his District 3 seat on the Vermilion Parish Police Jury earlier this year. Brent Landry took over on an interim basis. Landry qualified to run in October’s special election that will determine who serves the remaining two years of Granger’s term.
Joining Landry in the race for the Police Jury seat will be Kerry “Coach K” Richard. Richard entered the race Friday afternoon.
Gueydan will have a race for one of its Aldermen, after former Alderman Scott Vallo resigned in February. John Laseter, who has served as interim Alderman since Vallo’s resignation, qualified on Wednesday. Bobby Broussard officially entered the Gueydan race on Friday.
