Sheriff makes arrests for illegal tire dumping in Vermilion Parish
According to Sheriff Mike Couvillon, after months of investigative work, the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested Juan Carlos Montiel (Hispanic/Male DOB – 4/3/1988) of Larose, Louisiana for the illegal dumping of waste tires in Vermilion Parish.
On July 3, 2019, Montiel was arrested on four counts of Disposing of a Hazardous Substance (Waste Tires) and one count of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile.
The investigation was a multi-agency effort and included the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.
Also assisting the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office with the use of high tech camera surveillance systems was Louisiana Safety Systems, which proved to be a very useful tool for law enforcement.
Montiel is alleged to have dumped hundreds of tires in the area over a two-year period utilizing an enclosed cargo trailer. Montiel is also believed to be in the United States illegally, and Immigration has been notified.
“I would like to thank my deputies and the other agencies assisting with the investigation for their perseverance investigating this case. Tires have no serial number that links them to an owner or buyer, making these types of cases very challenging without a witness or other evidence left at the scene, requiring many man-hours of investigation and surveillance to break the case”, said Sheriff Mike Couvillon.
“Let this case be an example to anyone choosing Vermilion Parish as a tire dumping ground. Dump tires in our parish and we will investigate with the goal of sending those responsible to jail,” added the Sheriff.
Montiel was booked into the Vermilion parish jail with a total bond of twenty thousand dollars and a detainer placed for Immigration authorities.
The investigation is ongoing.
