Abbeville to reapply for state funds for projects

It has been an exercise in patience, but the Abbeville City Council remains focused on gaining state funds for flood protection and drainage projects in parts of the city.
The Council voted 5-0 during its regular meeting Tuesday evening to allow City Engineer Richard Primeaux to submit a request for funds through the Louisiana Capital Outlay program. The request is due by Nov. 1. The funds would cover projects in four areas of the city.

Three to be honored at Erath Athletic Hall of Fame banquet

ERATH — The Erath Backers Club is proud to announce the selection of three individuals for induction into the Erath High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Patricia Harrington Walsh, Tracy Moss Watson, and Edson L. Davis, Jr. will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Thursday, October 5, 2017.
The induction will take place at the Erath Community Building, located at 100 City Park Drive in Erath, beginning at 7:00 PM. The banquet is open to the public and free to attend.

Louisiana awarded $55.5 million to improve reading, writing skills of students

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana has been selected to receive a $55.5 million Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy (SRCL) grant to improve the reading and writing skills of struggling students, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Louisiana is one of 11 states selected to benefit from the federal grant, and the only state to receive it three consecutive times.

Glenn Lege named King of 69th Cattle Festival in Abbeville

Glenn Lege will reign as the King of the 69th Annual Louisiana Cattle Festival.
The Louisiana Cattle Festival that will be held Oct. 13 through Oct. 15 in Abbeville.
Glenn Lege was born in the small community of Esther, LA. He is a lifelong resident of Vermilion Parish.
He is married to the former Patricia Brasseux and they are the proud parents of six children and four grandchildren. Glenn received his education in Vermilion Parish, attending Mt. Carmel in the elementary years and then going on to graduate in 1969 from Vermilion Catholic High School.
