Vermilion Parish Tourism Commission moving from the Bypass to downtown

The Vermilion Parish Tourist Commission is in the process of moving from the Highway 14 By-pass location to downtown Abbeville and will reside in the Abbeville Cultural and Historical Alliance located at 200 N. Magadalen Square.
The idea of moving downtown was suggested late last year by the City of Abbeville and members of the Abbeville Cultural and Historical Alliance. After several months of information gathering, the Tourist Commission decided it would be a wise move.

Vermilion 4-H Achievement Day dedicated to Andrus

The 2018 Vermilion Parish 4-H Achievement Day will be held Saturday, at Kaplan High School. The day will be dedicated to John Andrus at the events opening assembly at 8:00 a.m. Achievement Day is the largest most important 4-H event of the year.
It involves about 500 4-H’ers from throughout the parish competing in 4-H contests and exhibits to demonstrate skills and knowledge gained during the club year.
It is fitting that this important event be dedicated to John Andrus, a 26 year leader of the Vermilion Parish 4-H Program.

Superintendent wants to hire 13 new employees for next school year

Because of the growth of some schools, School Superintendent Jerome Puyau is looking at adding 13 new employees for next year’s school year.
Next year, based on early projections, there is expected to be an increase of 120 students next year.
The superintendent explained his hiring plan to the board members at Monday’s committee meeting.
At tonight’s school board meeting, the board is expected to approve or not approve Puyau’s recommendation.
There are 1,287 school employees this school year.

Our Lady of Lourdes in Erath prepares for St. Joseph Altar

ERATH — The sixth annual St. Joseph Altar at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Erath will be held at Pope John Paul II Parish Hall located at 700 South Broadway Street.
Father Andre Metrejean, Pastor, will bless the altar at noon (after 11:00 AM mass) on Sunday, March 18, 2018. After a brief ceremony, explaining the history and custom of the St. Joseph Altar, the traditional meatless spaghetti and Italian cookies will be served until 8:00 PM that evening.

Vermilion Parish School Board wants to buy two acres of land in Maurice

MAURICE — The Vermilion Parish School Board’s Properties’ Committee agreed to purchase two acres of land next to Cecil Picard Elementary in Maurice.
School board member Chris Gautreaux brought up the buying of the land and explained that the school is landlocked and land for sale near the elementary school does not come up for sale too often.
The appraised price for the two acres (2.075 acres to be exact) is $72,000 or about $36,000 an acre.
