Vermilion school district will get $9.4 million from Federal Government

Vermilion Parish Superintendent Tommy Byler has a plan for spending the $9.4 million that the Vermilion Parish School district will be getting, thanks to a whopping $1.1 billion in new federal assistance.
Louisiana landed $1.1 billion in federal aid — 13th most in the nation — when Congress approved its second stimulus plan on Dec. 27. However, the state is not sending out those dollars for now.
Districts will be able to spend 50 percent of their allocation starting in June and the other half starting in January 2022.

Mike Renfrow takes oath in Kaplan

KAPLAN - After Joyce Carbaugh decided not to run for the seat she took over when her huband John passed away last year, Mike Renfrow ran unopposed for the seat of Councilman for District B.
Renfrow was sworn-in by Judge Jonathan Perry before the city council meeting last Tuesday. A 23-year resident of the district he now represents, Renfrow’s background is as strong as his roots.

Rockefeller Refuge to reopen to public on March 1

Some public areas of Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge will reopen Monday (March 1) the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced. The refuge has been closed due to severe damage caused by Hurricane Laura on Aug. 29, 2020.
Although many public fishing areas, including piers and boat docks, will reopen Monday, there are some areas that remain closed or restricted because of ongoing repairs. Signage identifying those areas will be posted and users are asked to obey all restrictions. LDWF’s enforcement division will be monitoring the area.

Tyler Meaux

Tyler Meaux sentenced to 48 years for death of teens

A little more than three years after being involved in a drunk driving crash that killed two North Vermilion High students, Tyler Meaux has been sentenced.
On Thursday, 15th Judicial District Court Judge Laurie Hulin sentenced Meaux, 23, to 48 years in prison, with all but 12 suspended. This comes after Meaux was charged with vehicular homicide for a drunk driving arrest on Feb. 4, 2018. The crash, which occurred on U.S. Hwy. 167, just north of Abbeville, claimed the lives of Sydney Colomb, 15, and Alana Duhon, 16.

BATON ROUGE — With an estimated $2 billion provided to Louisiana from a federal coronavirus aid bill passed in December and the likelihood of another federal stimulus package, state legislators are hopeful they can balance the budget for fiscal 2022 with no more than modest cuts.
