Sales tax revenue helps put Abbeville finances in positive position

Thanks in large part to sales tax revenue that has surpassed expectations, the City of Abbeville’s finances are in pretty good shape after the first three months of the year.
During a finance committee meeting held on Tuesday, the Abbeville City Council heard an update on the first quarter of 2017. Steve Moosa of Darnall, Sikes, Gardes &
Frederick provided the update.
“Overall we are in good shape,” Moosa said. “Sales tax and water and sewer revenue are going in a positive direction.”

UL Lafayette’s Spring Commencement ceremonies set for Friday, May 12

LAFAYETTE — Undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees will be conferred during the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Spring 2017 Commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 12, at the Cajundome and Convention Center and at Bourgeois Hall.
The General Assembly will be held at 11 a.m. at the Cajundome. Doctoral candidates will be hooded at this session. All graduating seniors and faculty members will attend, wearing full academic regalia.
Master’s and bachelor’s degrees will be conferred at ceremonies for each academic college. A schedule and locations are below.

Abbeville woman gets more than just a speeding ticket in Erath

ERATH - Briana Touchet of Abbeville learned the hard way about speeding on the La. 14 Bypass in Erath.
Early Sunday morning, Touchet, 22, was driving through Erath on the bypass when an Erath patrolman pulled her over for allegedly speeding.
According to Erath Police Chief Anna LaPointe, Touchet was allegedly travelling 66 miles per hour in a 55-mile per hour zone.

Vermilion Parish weather update: Damage to structures, power outage in Pecan Island

In an update to the weather conditions in Vermilion Parish, Sheriff Mike Couvillon says that reports of hail damage to structures in Pecan Island has been confirmed as well as power outage.
Sheriff Couvillon says between mile post 91 and mile post 92 in Pecan Island there is a significant amount of hail on the roadway and DOTD has been notified.

Suspect shot Monday during incident near Maurice is in custody; will be booked on Attempted Murder of a Police Officer after release from hospital

As the ongoing investigation into the May 1st, 2017 officer involved shooting continues, Louisiana State Police investigators have identified the suspect as 46-year-old James Derouen of New Iberia.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that on the morning of May 1, deputies with the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a suspicious man armed with a gun in the area of Kirk Road and Morton Road.
Deputies requested assistance from local agencies and State Police.
