Here are a few photos of the Saturday Erath/Sterlington baseball game on Saturday.

 SULPHUR – The No. 2 Erath Bobcats are now one win away from their first-ever state championship as they defeated the No. 1 Sterlington Panthers 7-6 in a thrilling, back-and-forth game at McMurry Park.
 The game two victory now sets up a winner-take-all scenario for game three tomorrow at 11 A.M.
Erath (26-12) fell behind 4-0 over the first two innings, came back, fell behind again, and came back one more time.  Head coach Jeremy Picard said his team refused to lose.
“Our kids are resilient; they kept fighting,” Picard said.  “The loss yesterday was on me.  I asked them to empty the tank today, give us everything they got, and let the chips fall where they may.  They didn’t quit until the game was over.”
According to sophomore shortstop and game one starting pitcher Landen Derouen, the team’s motivation was about more than just baseball.
 “Yesterday, everyone blamed our coach for the loss,” Derouen said.  “In my heart, I knew he made the decision he had to make.  We knew we needed to win for him today because we could tell he was down on himself.  We did it today, and we will win for him tomorrow too.”
 Senior Seth Leger got the start on the mound for Erath.  The senior battled for seven innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out four.
  “This was my last time pitching in a high school game,” Leger said.  I had to give it my all.  There’s no way I was coming out. 
“They have some dogs on that team.  They are going to compete.  But no matter how many runs they put up, we’re going to put up more, and we’re going to win.”
After giving up a solo homerun in the first inning, Leger appeared to settle down, retiring the first two batters in the second.  But then, the Panthers got a single, a hit-by-pitch, an error, and another single to take a 4-0 lead.
The Bobcats got their first run in the bottom of the second when Derouen raced home on a passed ball.  They got to within 4-3 in the third inning when Tate Collins scored on a passed ball, and Jack Landry’s RBI single scored Koah Copell.
 Erath added two more in the fourth to claim its first lead of the game.  A ball off the bat of Leger was misplayed.  Carter Champagne and Talen Landry scored to put the Bobcats ahead 5-4.
Sterlington answered in the top of the fifth with an RBI double to knot the score at five.  One batter later, an RBI single put the Panthers back on top, 6-5.
 That score held until the bottom of the sixth inning.  Senior Brennan Broussard walked to the plate down one with two on and two out.  He ripped the first pitch he saw over the head of the centerfielder for a bases-clearing triple.  Talen Landry and Braxton Richard scored to put Erath ahead for good, 7-6.
  “I was seeing the ball very well again today,” Broussard said.  “Their pitcher hadn’t thrown a lot this year, so I knew he was coming with fastballs.  I was expecting it, got my foot down early, and did what I did.”
Broussard led the Bobcats at the dish, going two-for-four with two RBI.  Jack Landry had two hits and one RBI, while Carter Champagne also added two hits.  Derouen, Landon LeMaire, and Talen Landry each contributed one hit.

SULPHUR - The No. 2 Erath Bobcats could not maintain a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning against the No. 1 Sterlington Panthers on Thursday. The Bobcats lost the first game of a three-game series, 5-4.
Erath will Friday at 11 a.m. in the best two of three series. If they win Friday, the two teams will meet in game three at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The Bobcats, making their first-ever appearance in the Non-Select Division III high school playoffs, had the Panthers where they wanted them.
Erath was leading 4-0, and starting EHS pitcher Landen Derouen was rolling right along, giving up only two hits and no runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. 
Erath was three outs away from winning the first game of a three-game series.
Derouen walked the first batter in the bottom of the seventh inning, and that was it for him. After the walk, the Erath coaches pulled Derouen, who had pitched six innings and given up one run and only one hit.
Hudson Guidry replaced him, however, for only one batter because he walked the first batter he faced.
Guidry was pulled from the hill after that.
Then, the EHS coaches decided to put in pitcher Braxton Richard, with two men on base and no outs. However, he walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. 
Still in the bottom of the seventh frame, Sterlington scored four runs on two hits, including a 3-RBI triple to tie the game 4-4 with one out, and then scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk.
The Bobcats outhit the Panthers 8-3, but the game’s difference was Erath’s three pitchers combined to walk nine batters.
Seth Leger and Derouen had each two hits. Other Bobcats with hits were Landon Lemaire (1-for-4),  Braxton Richard (1-for-4), Jack Landry (1-for-3)  and Talen Landry (1-for-3).

SULPHUR – The No. 2 Vermilion Catholic Eagles came from behind twice to defeat the No. 11 Riverside Academy Rebels 9-8 in the Division IV Select semifinals at McMurry Park.

The Eagles (24-7) fell behind 4-1 and 6-3 before storming back in a four-run fifth inning to claim a 7-6 lead. Riverside scored twice in the sixth to go back on top 8-7 before VC answered two more times in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead for good.

VC skipper Ben Harrington lost track of how often his team had to pick themselves up this season. Whether they were dealing with freak injuries or falling behind in a game, they always found a way.

“This team is resilient,” Harrington said. “Everything we have gone through this season has just made us stronger. There is no quit in these guys. It doesn’t matter what’s on the scoreboard. They play like it’s 0-0 for seven innings.”

Jackson Trahan put the Eagles ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first when he sent a groundball up the middle for a single that scored Jonathan Dartez. That score held until the top of the third when Riverside broke through for four runs.

Trahan picked up his second RBI of the game in the bottom half of the inning when he lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Ross Dartez. VC got to within 4-3 in the fourth when Dom Gautreaux grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Will Simon.

Riverside countered with two more runs in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 6-3. The Eagles rallied again in the bottom of the fifth. Will Simon got it started with an RBI double to left that scored Trahan. Caden DeHart followed with a seeing-eye single that plated Byrce Lege and Simon to tie the score at six. Jacob Dubois then sent a rope to leftfield for an RBI double that scored DeHart and put VC back on top, 7-6.

The Rebels plated two more runs in the top of the sixth to regain the lead 8-7 before VC rallied one last time. Lege tied it up with an RBI double off the leftfield wall that scored Jonathan Dartez. Simon then hit a single to left field that was misplayed and allowed Lege to score the go-ahead run.

Riverside threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with only one out. Gautreaux snagged a sure hit from the pitcher’s mound and started a 1-2-3 double play. He threw home to Dubois for the first out. Dubois then fired to Trahan at first for the final out.

Simon led the team with three hits and an RBI. Jackson Trahan had two hits and two runs knocked in, while Caden DeHart had one hit and two RBI. Bryce Lege had two hits and an RBI, while Dubois had one hit (double) and an RBI.

Gautreaux pitched the final two innings of relief to earn the win, allowing no runs on two hits and two walks while striking one.

In a rematch of the 2024 football state championship game, VC will face the No. 12 Ouachita Christian Eagles on Wednesday at 2 P.M. for the Division IV Select state championship. OC defeated top-ranked and undefeated Covenant Christian 12-7 to advance.

“You couldn’t write a better story,” Harrington said of the rematch. “I haven’t done my homework on OC yet. I will start scouting and making some calls on the bus, but we’re ready for whatever. We’re one of the most resilient teams in the state. They can throw whoever, we’re coming.”
