Attending the Erath Council meeting with 96-year-old Willis Granger (sitting) were family members (from left to right) Monica Harrington (care taker), Janice Granger (daughter), Charlie Byford (son in law), Erath Mayor Taylor Mencacci, Alderman and son-in-law Jason Connor, Tommy Granger (son) and his wife Arlene, along with Courtney Connor (grand daughter).

Not forgetting veterans: Erath mayor has veterans say Pledge of Allegiance before each meeting

ERATH — When Taylor Mencacci became mayor of Erath, he vowed to have a veteran lead the Pledge of Allegiance before each Erath council meeting.
On Monday at the town’s monthly meeting, one of only a handful of remaining World War II veterans from Erath led the Pledge.
Willis Granger, who is 96, was surrounded by friends and family when he began saying the Pledge of Allegiance.
When Granger entered the Navy in 1944, he spoke no English. He was a seaman who worked on maintaining ammunition aboard the USS Catoctin.
While serving on the USS Catoctin, he was present for the Yalta Conference in 1945. The conference brought together the leaders of America, Russia and England. The leaders, including President Roosevelt, met to discuss the terms of an unconditional surrender of Hitler’s Germany.
President Roosevelt and his daughter were aboard the USS Catoctin before the conference.
In 2002, Granger was recognized by the French government for his service and presented a commendation from the French Consulate in a ceremony in Lafayette.
Granger is the oldest member in the Derouen-Moss American Legion in Erath.
This is the first World War II veteran to lead the Pledge in Erath. Mencacci, who has been mayor for four months, said because he is a veteran, this is something he has always wanted to do.
“No one hears their stories,” said Mencacci. “This is a chance to hear their stories and what they have been through.”
Mencacci enlisted in the National Guard in 1999 at the age of 17. In 2004 as a medic, he served in Iraq for a year.

Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office warns of Social Security phone scam

Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon advises the public to be aware of a recent Social Security Scam where a caller says that he’s from the Federal government and your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended and you should contact them at +(603)399-6391.
The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office has received reports about scammers trying to trick people out of their personal information by telling them that they need to “reactivate” their supposedly “suspended” SSNs. The scammers say the SSN was suspended because of some connection to fraud or other criminal activity. They say to call a number to clear it up – where they’ll ask you for personal information.
Thing is, Social Security numbers do not get suspended. This is just a variation of a government imposter scam that’s after your SSN, bank account number, or other personal information. In this variation of the scheme, the caller pretends to be protecting you from a scam while he’s trying to lure you into one.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself:

• Never give out or confirm personal information over the phone, via email or on a website until you’ve checked out whoever is asking you for it.
• Do not trust a name, phone number, or email address just because it seems to be connected with the government. Con artists use official-sounding names and may fake caller ID or email address information to make you trust them. Besides, the government normally contacts people by postal mail.
• Contact government agencies directly, using telephone numbers and website addresses you know to be legitimate.
If someone has tried to steal your personal information by pretending to be from the government, report it to the FTC.

Vermilion Parish Superintendent Jerome Puyau

Puyau removes his name from list for Lafayette job

Two days before the process to find the interim superintendent in Lafayette Parish was set to begin, Vermilion Parish School Superintendent Jerome Puyau removed his name from the list for the job.
Last week, Puyau made it public that he applied for the interim superintendent position that will come open in May when the current superintendent retires.
When he applied for the one-year term position, he made it clear he only wanted the job for a year and had no intentions of reapplying for the permanent position.
However, after stewing on the idea, on Monday, Puyau informed school board members and parish principals he will not be going on an interview.
He contacted the Lafayette School District to remove his name, and he also sent the school board members and parish principals a text.
“After careful consideration, talks with my family, self-reflection, and prayers, I have decided to dedicate the rest of my career to the district I love and cherish. I will be announcing the removal of my application for the interim superintendent position for Lafayette Parish.
“Many times we need to contemplate the aspirations and goals in one’s life. My goals have been fulfilled here in “Our Vermilion.” I look forward to being part of the next steps in providing our students with a world-class educational experience.
“We might be small, but we are resilient.”
He has been superintendent in Vermilion for seven years. In that time, he has helped Vermilion Parish become the fourth best school district in the state. When the test scores came out recently, Vermilion climbed to No. 4. When he took over, the school district ranked No. 17.
The school district had a record seven schools that received “A” grades and eight with “B” grades.
While he has helped Vermilion rise to the top in-state scores, he has also had a rocky last few years.
This year he was placed on paid administrative leave in August and returned in November after a Hearing Officer found the board was arbitrary and capricious on their decision to suspend him.
