Nahshon Brooks is wanted for questioning by law enforcement dealing with the shooting of an Abbeville Police Officer.

State Police looking for Nahshon Brooks as the alleged shooter of Abbeville police officer

Brooks has a history of shooting people on St. Peter Avenue

Nahshon Brooks, 28, is no stranger to shooting someone on St. Peter Avenue and fleeing.
The Abbeville Police Department is looking for Brooks as the alleged shooter in the shooting of an Abbeville Police Officer.
The officer was on scene answering a call on St. Peter Avenue, when she was shot in the shoulder.
The State Police confirmed Thursday that Brooks is the alleged shooter.
Back in February of 2016, Brooks was involved in a shooting in Abbeville. He allegedly fired shots at another man on St. Peter Avenue in 2016. The man was hit multiple times. A witness identified Brooks at the time of the shooting.
It took the Abbeville Department 11 months to locate Brooks. In January of 2017, Brooks was discovered hiding at a home in Brunswick County, North Carolina.
Two Abbeville Police detectives drove to North Carolina and brought him back to Vermilion Parish where he was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder, possession of firearm/carry a concealed weapon by a convicted felon. His total bond at the time of his arrest was $465,000.
However, in May of 2018, Brooks accepted a lesser plea charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and his other two charges were dismissed. He was sentenced to six years at hard labor, which was suspended, except for one year. He was given credit for time served.

Law enforcement search for the suspected shooter.

First-ever Abbeville female police officer shot in the line of duty

Law enforcement still looking for shooter as of Thursday morning

A female Abbeville Police Officer is in stable condition in a local hospital after being allegedly shot by Nahshon Brooks in a Wednesday night shooting in Abbeville.
An Abbeville officer was shot in the shoulder on a domestic call.
She has been with the Abbeville Police Department for less than five years.
The officer is one of three female officers who work for the Abbeville Police Department.
She is also the first female police officer shot from Vermilion Parish.
The Abbeville Police Department received a phone call Wednesday night from a female at a residence on St. Peter Avenue around 7:50 p.m.
The officer answered the call and went to the residence. While searching for Nahshon Brooks outside a home, she discovered him near the house.
The suspect allegedly shot the police officer and then took off running towards the 600 block of Gertrude Street.
The officer never got off a shot.
She was airlifted to a local hospital and is in stable condition and also has a collapsed lung.
In the meantime, the Abbeville Police Department, Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshal’s Office, and the Louisiana State Police began a search for the shooter.
Neighbors near St. Peters and Gertrude streets were asked to remain in their residence during the search.
As of Thursday morning, the suspect has not been found.
State Police PIO Thomas Gossen reiterated late Wednesday night that the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous and that anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact 911 immediately..
Law enforcement are looking for Nahshon Brooks as a person of interest in the shooting.
The shooting occurred less than half a mile from J. H. Williams Middle School. Because the suspect is still at large, all Abbeville schools were on partial lockdown as of Thursday morning.

Vermilion Parish Relay for Life set for Saturday

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Vermilion Parish is hosting their fundraising event on Saturday, April 6 at Magdalen Square in Abbeville. The event is from 6 p.m. until midnight.
The fundraising participants unite for the annual American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay for Life of Vermilion to help beat our biggest rival - cancer. The Relay for Life movement inspires the community to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change.
Funds raised from Relay For Life events allow the ACS to attack cancer in dozens of ways, each of them critical to achieving a world without cancer – from developing breakthrough therapies and innovative research, to building supportive communities that come together to help those affected by cancer with access to treatment. The ACS provides empowering resources to deploying activists to raise awareness and develop game-changing approaches to address the cancer burden for all people.
In the past, a small number of recent survivors were honored; but this year, Vanessa Hebert said that since it’s their 20th year, all survivors will be honored.
Jamie Bergeron & the Kickin’ Cajuns will be the entertainment for the event as well as great food and lots of fun. There is no fee to enter and donations are always welcomed in fundraising for American Cancer Society.
There will also be a Cancer Survivor Lap, Caregiver Ceremony and a Luminaria Ceremony.
