Tim Campbell of Abbeville will be running tonight in the track meet.

North Vermilion Track Meet to be held in Abbeville

The North Vermilion Patriot Relays will be held at Bill Gooch Track Complex at J.H. Williams Middle School in Abbeville.
Because work is being done on North Vermilion’s track, the meet had to be moved.
There will be 15 teams competing in the meet.
The field event begins at 3 p.m., and the running starts at 6 p.m.
Competing in the meet will be North Vermilion, Erath, Delcambre, Kaplan, Gueydan, VC, Abbeville, Church Point, Crowley, Notre Dame, Teurlings, Southside, ESA, Ascension Episcopal, and Breaux Bridge.
In the boy’s action, the Abbeville High Wildcats will be trying to win their second straight track meet. Earlier this week the Wildcats won the Rene Trahan Track and Field Meet in Abbeville.
Breaux Bridge is also a top contender.
The North Vermilion Lady Patriots will also be trying to win their second straight track meet.
The Lady Patriots won the Rene Trahan meet in Abbeville last week.
The Lady Panthers of Delcambre should also contend for the title.

Erath Lady Bobcats blank Abbeville

Erath pitcher Lexie Gisclair threw a gem on Wednesday for the Lady Bobcats, allowing zero runs and besting the Abbeville Lady Wildcats, 15-0
The Lady Bobcats secured the victory thanks to eight runs in the first inning. They smacked three straight singles. Carrington Neveaux, Madison Mouton and Chloe Landry had the singles and would later score. Rylee Vincent had a double in the same inning.
Gisclair was the winning pitcher for the Lady Bobcats. She allowed two hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out seven and walking one.
Alexis Stelly took the loss for Abbeville. She surrendered 14 runs on nine hits over four innings, striking out two.
The Lady Bobcats collected 11 hits. Mouton and Neveaux each collected two hits to lead the Lady Bobcats.
Erath had four doubles: Jacee Gainer, Gisclair, Mouton and Vincent.
Abbeville’s hitters were Emma Reynolds, Ann Marie Richard and Kennedy Gordan.

July 24, 1965 ~ March 20, 2019

Abbeville—A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 25, 2019 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Todd Michael LaPorte, 53, who died Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at Abbeville General Hospital. He will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Reverend Louis Richard officiating the services. Serving as pallbearers will be Mark LaPorte, Troy LaPorte, James Noel, Jr., Kimble Sagrera, Leighton Guilbeaux, and Bill Tribaldos. Honorary pallbearers will be Jake Hebert, Aaron David, Grant David, and fellow workers with Acadian Ambulance family.
Family was important to Todd, he loved spending time with his children and adored his grandchildren.
Todd began his career working with Acadian Ambulance Services in 1985. He started as a paramedic and worked his way up to Gulf of Mexico Regional Manager with Safety Management Systems.
Todd is survived by his wife of 31 years, Michelle D. LaPorte of Abbeville; daughter, Lauren L. Hebert and her husband Jake of Maurice; son, Mark A. LaPorte and his wife Taylor of Maurice; two grandchildren, Andrew and Audrey Hebert of Maurice; mother, Dolores B. Landry of Abbeville; father, Larry LaPorte of Abbeville; brother, Troy LaPorte and his wife Laurie of Abbeville; two sisters, Michelle E. LaPorte of Lafayette, and Danielle L. David and her husband Lance of Abbeville; father and mother in-law, James and Elizabeth Dardeau; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles St., on Sunday, March 24, 2019 from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM with a rosary being prayed at 7:00 PM; Monday, March 25, 2019 from 8:00 AM until 1:45 PM when the procession will depart for the church.

Boil advisory issued in Kaplan

Update: Mayor MIke Kloesel, the advisory was lifted on March 23.

KAPLAN — The City of Kaplan has issued a water boil advisory.
According to Kaplan Mayor Mike Kloesel, “We have experienced a main water line break just a short while ago. Although it has been fixed, due to a loss in water pressure the Department of Health and Hospitals has issued a mandatory water boil for a several block area within the city that will remain in effect until you are notified otherwise.
“ONLY residents east of Herpin Ave, between 2nd and 4th Street will be under this water boil advisory. Every resident affected by this water boil will receive a written notice this afternoon by a city worker. If you do not receive this notice you are not affected. If you are within the area affected but not at home a notice will be left on your front door. Please rest assured that we are doing everything possible to move out of the mandatory water boil in a safe, responsible and efficient manner. Water will need to be tested and approved by DHH before removing the water boil advisory.”

Alvin Wiltz

Man wanted in connection to Abbeville shooting has turned himself in

On March 19, 2019 Alvin Wiltz (A.K.A. Gator) turned himself in at the Vermilion Parish Correctional Center. Mr. Wiltz was wanted by the Abbeville Police Department after a shooting which occurred on March 12, 2019 near the intersection of N. Bailey Street and Clover Street.
Mr. Wiltz was booked on a warrant for Attempted 2nd Degree Murder. Mr. Wiltz’s bond has been set at $250,000.00.
Additional charges against Mr. Wiltz are anticipated.
Chief of Police Bill Spearman would like to commend his officers for a job well done. Chief Spearman would also like to thank the citizens of Abbeville for their support and help they provide to the Abbeville Police Department.

Gleanor Trahan

August 7, 1938 ~ March 16, 2019

LEROY — A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church honoring the life of Gleanor Trahan, 80, who died Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Kaplan Healthcare Center.
She will be laid to rest at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery with Reverend Louis Richard officiating the services.
She is survived by her son, Edward J. Trahan of Abbeville; two daughters, Dana Saltzman and her husband, Neelis “Pio” of Mulvey and Lisa T. Bertrand and her husband, Willis of Kaplan; ten grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward R. Trahan; one son, Kevin Dale Trahan; one sister, Elaine Trahan; three brothers, Ronald, Russell, and Connie Landry; and her parents, John Landry and the former Hazel Broussard.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Ave., on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 from 1:00 PM until 10:00 PM with a rosary being prayed at 7:00 PM; Wednesday, March 20, 2019 from 8:00 AM until 12:30 PM when the procession departs for the church.

Marion J. Sellers

ABBEVILLE — Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville honoring the life of Marion J. Sellers, 69, who died Sunday, March 17, 2019 at his residence. Deacon William “Billy” Vincent will officiate the service.
He is survived by his sons, Scotty Sellers, and Shannon Sellers and his wife Sabrina; and three granddaughters, Katlyn Sellers, Zoe Sellers and Kinsley Sellers.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Annie Lou Romero Sellers; parents, Jessie Sellers and the former Anna Mae Landry; son, Bryan Sellers; and brothers, Raymond Sellers and Freddie Sellers.

Jimmie E. Gaspard

KAPLAN – Funeral Services for Jimmie E. Gaspard, 72, will be held at 3:30PM on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at David Funeral Chapel of Abbeville with Deacon Bill Vincent officiating. Interment will follow at Abshire Cemetery in Meaux.
Visitation will be at David Funeral Home of Abbeville on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 from 11:00AM until 9:00PM with a recitation of the rosary at 7:00PM. Visitation will resume on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 from 9:00 AM until the time of the services.
A native of Abbeville and a resident of Kaplan, Mr. Gaspard died at his residence on Sunday, March 17, 2019. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Jimmie retired after working as a funeral director for over 30 years serving family in their time of need. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the joy of his life. He was also known for his love for people.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Donna Landry Gaspard of Kaplan; two sons, David R. Gaspard and his wife Jessica of Kaplan and Gerard Gaspard of Kaplan; five grandchildren, Damian Gaspard and his wife Chalie, Paula Leblanc and her husband Duston, Stacey Hollier and her husband Lance, Alex Gaspard, and Allie Gaspard; six great grandchildren, Cade Prejean, Cole Thibodeaux, Owen Gaspard, Ross Hollier, Landon Hollier, and Adaleigh Hollier; a brother, Fedlis Gaspard, Jr.; and one sister, Lucy G. Meaux.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fedlis Gaspard, Sr. and Cora Broussard Gaspard; and three brothers, Calvin Gaspard, Carrol Gaspard, and Ronald Gaspard.
Serving pallbearers will be Duston LeBlanc, Damian Gaspard, Francis Landry, Kevin Landry, Randy Duhon, and Fedlis Gaspard, Jr.

Sally Dugas Broussard

Erath – A Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Sally Dugas Broussard, 84, will be held at 3:00PM on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Andre Metrejean officiating. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Lourdes Mausoleum.
Visitation will be at the Pope John Paul II Hall in Erath on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 from 2:00PM until the time of the service with a recitation of the rosary at 2:30PM.
A native and a resident of Erath, Mrs. Broussard died at 10:40 AM on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at Pelican Pointe Nursing Center.
She is survived by four Children, Bryan Broussard and his wife Delores of Lafayette, Celeste Broussard of Erath, Mary Broussard of Erath, and Nathan Broussard and his husband Arturo Eddie Perez of Missouri City, TX; five grandchildren, Sada Duhon Powers and her husband Daniel, Seth Duhon and his wife Kassie, Dane Thibodeaux and his significant other Kristen, Jena Hicks-Delcambre and her husband Randall, and Austin Hicks; four great grandchildren, Madix Powers, Evangeline Duhon, Jaxson Delcambre, and one baby boy on the way; a sister, Mitzie Broussard; and a niece/godchild Debbie Brushaber and her husband Lester.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Broussard; her parents, Wilfred and Sadie Landry Dugas, a brother in law, Dennis Broussard; and a son in law, Mark A. Walker.
Serving as pallbearers will be Seth Duhon, Dane Thibodeaux, Austin Hicks, Arturo Eddie Perez, Daniel Powers, Randall Delcambre, and Damian Romero.
The family would like to thank the staff of both Grace Hospice of Lafayette and Pelican Point Nursing Home of Maurice for all the care they gave to Sally.
