The Abbeville girls had to settle for second place after finishing in a two-way tie for first place with Peabody High. AHS lost the state title on a tie breaker rule.

Abbeville Powerlifting Teams have crazy finish at state meet

Abbeville head powerlifting coach Travis Werner cannot ask for a better finish from his two teams.
The Abbeville Wildcats and the Lady Wildcats finished in first place, however, tied with two other teams at the Division III State Powerlifting Meet.
In powerlifting, there are tiebreaker rules that help break the tie.
When the tiebreaker rules were applied, the Lady Wildcats finished in second place, and the Wildcats finished still tied for first place with Church Point.
Last year the Wildcats won the title outright, winning by two points.
It is the third year in a row the Wildcats win the state powerlifting title.
This year, after the lifting was over and points counted, AHS was tied with Church Point, 41-41. Then comes the title breaker rules.
Both schools had three first places, three-second places, two thirds, and one fourth-place finish.
After five tiebreaker rules were applied, the two schools were still tied. So, the LHSAA awarded both schools the state title.
However, later that Thursday night, AHS Powerlifting Coach Travis Werner learned there was a “last resort” tiebreaker rule that was not applied when trying to break the tie. If the LHSAA applied the final tie-breaker rule, it would have given Abbeville the outright title.
“The competition was nothing short of exhilarating,” said Werner. “As I explained to our athletes, the joy is in the preparation, not the outcome. Whether they finished in first place or last, they’d spent an entire year working passionately toward a goal with one another. The countless hours spent in the weight room and the friendships they made along the way are the real prizes. I couldn’t be prouder of our teams.”
AHS had three boys state champions. They were Chuck Shuford, Alvaro Lopez, and Jerimya Overton.
Shuford won the Division III Lightweight lifter. The 123 pound-Shuford benched 300 pounds, deadlifted 515 pounds and squatted 485 pounds for a total lift of 1,300 pounds. His total of 1,300 pounds were composite state records.
Members of the state winning weight lifting team are Raj Patel, Phillip McCoy, Chuck Shuford, Christian Alvarez, Jason Alvarez, Addison Gaspard, Marlon Coco, Deion Williams, Dontae Dunaway, Alvaro Lopez., Ian Grouvillia and Jerimyah Overton.

Lady Cats battle with Peabody

The lead exchanged six times in the final 30 minutes of the girls’ competition and came down to the last deadlift of the meet.
The Lady Wildcats finished tied with Peabody 46-46.
The first tiebreaker rule, who has the most first place finishes, was applied.
Peabody had more first places than Abbeville, thus, giving Peabody the state title.
Last year the Lady Wildcats finished second to Peabody, but by 20 points.
This is the third year in a row the Abbeville girls finish second at the state meet.
“That is not disappointing to me,” Werner said. “I consider that to be a tremendous success and have enjoyed every minute of the journey. I’m confident that I speak for all 12 of our boys and all 12 of our girls when I say that it was a pleasure to prepare and compete together.
“Not every lesson learned is learned in the classroom. Just as many are learned in athletics. We coaches are confident that we’ll be sending our graduating seniors out into the world as better adults than they would have been otherwise, whether they’ll be wearing a state championship ring or not
The Lady Wildcats did have four individual state winners.
Shaye Roberston won the 97-pound weight class.
Briana Tomino won the 105-pound weight class.
Hanna Barnette won the 181-pound weight class.
Jayla Reaux won the 220-pound weight class.
Members of the state second place team are Evony Thurman, Destani Longman, Hannah Smith, Jayla Reaux, NyGene Williams, Lainey Trahan, Makayla Jones, Hannah Barnett, Aaliyah Coco, Franchesca Regalado, Shaye Robertson.

Officials with the Vermilion Parish Police Jury, City of Abbeville and members of the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce take part in the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new LSU AgCenter Extension Office in Abbeville.

AgCenter ribbon officially cut in Abbeville

On Thursday morning, Vermilion Parish officials cut the ribbon on the new LSU AgCenter Extension office building in Abbeville, more than two-and-a-half years after the old building became a casualty of historic flooding.
AgCenter agents have been operating out of the building, located on West Port Street, after moving in a few weeks ago. Vermilion Parish 4-H is also centralized in the building.
“We are enjoying this building,” LSU AgCenter agent Andrew Granger said. “It’s going to be great for the people of Vermilion Parish.”
Vermilion Parish Police Jury President Kevin Sagrera agreed.
“It’s a beautiful building,” Sagrera said Thursday morning. “It’s a good thing for our kids in 4-H to have this. There is a lot that goes through this building, from the farmers to aquaculture. This is a tremendous
organization here.
“We’re glad we were able to get this building together and get it back.”
During the historic flooding in August of 2016, the old extension office suffered heavy damage and the police jury made the decision to completely demolish the parish-owned building. Through the use of rededicated funds approved by Vermilion Parish voters, there is not only a new building, the ground it sits on is elevated.
“We want to thank the Police Jurors,” Andrew Granger said. “It is their vision and leadership that helped get us back in this building.”
Granger also acknowledged the citizens of the parish, who voted to approve re-dedication of $1.3 million from the Health Unit Advalorum Tax.
“We thank the people of Vermilion Parish,” Granger said. “They voted to make funds available to help make this happen.”
There had been some discussion of finding a new location for the AgCenter office. Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza said Thursday during the ribbon cutting ceremony that he is grateful it remains in the city.
“I want to thank the jury and the county agents’ office for continuing the presence of this facility in Abbeville,” Piazza said. “I know there were a lot of choices and decisions of where to locate this facility. You had a lot of good options.
“You decided to pick Abbeville as your home site, and we very much appreciate that.”

Our Lady Of Lourdes in Erath prepares for St. Joseph Altar; Meet Audrey Bouillion

ERATH — The seventh annual St. Joseph Altar at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Erath will be held next weekend at Pope John Paul II Parish Hall.
The church hall is located at 700 South Broadway Street. Fr. Andre Metrejean, Pastor, will have the blessing of the altar on Saturday, March 16, 2019 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
After a brief ceremony explaining the history and customs of the Saint Joseph Altar, the traditional meatless spaghetti and cookies will be served to all visitors. Visitation to the altar and meals will continue on Sunday, March 17 from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The St. Joseph Altar was a custom that originated in Sicily, Italy in the 12th century. A severe drought and famine hit the region. The people prayed to St. Joseph to end the famine. After the drought ended and the crops prospered, the people erected altars of food to their patron saint. In thanksgiving, they invited the poor into their homes to celebrate and share their food from the St. Joseph Altar.
The altar is adorned with homemade cakes, cookies, breads, fruits, eggs and vegetables that are donated in the spirit of generosity by many church parishioners. At the close of the celebration of the altar, all remaining food is given to the poor and needy in our community. There is no charge for the meal, but monetary donations are welcome to help to defray the miscellaneous expenses of the table.

Meet Audrey Bouillion – ‘The Cookie Lady’

ERATH — Seven years ago, Fr. Bill Melancon began the tradition of the St. Joseph Altar in Erath.
At that time, most of the people in the community had never seen a St. Joseph’s Altar. Fr. Melancon would make the traditional Italian Fig Cookies from skills he acquired from the parishioners of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Patterson, Louisiana. However, he needed someone to bake the decorated cookies. He enlisted the help of Ms. Audrey Bouillion. Ms. Bouillion, a retired nurse, said that she was surprised because she had never made decorated cookies. That didn’t stop the vivacious Ms. Audrey. She searched YouTube to get recipes on Royal Icing and directions on “how to” decorate the cookies.
Ms. Audrey uses an old family recipe she received from her father’s sister, Aunt Rena Delcambre. All of her beautifully decorated chalice and cross cookies are made following “Nan’s Sugar Cookie Recipe.” Baking and decorating cookies takes a lot of time, so Ms. Audrey begins the cookie preparation a month before the altar is set up. She begins by making the decorations and dough and freezing it ahead of time. Neatly stacked in her freezer are stacks and stacks of Royal Icing beads, crosses, and other decorations. Ms. Audrey stated that she used approximately 15 pounds of flour with 8 pounds of sugar to make approximately 200 cookies. She also makes Williamsburg ginger cookies and sweet dough tarts. Smiling, she said she likes to make big cookies because “that’s what the children prefer.” When asked why she gives a month of her time toward the success of the St. Joseph Altar, Ms. Audrey simply stated, “because I love St. Joseph and I have a devotion to the Holy Family too.”
More cookies are needed to feed all the visitors. If you wish to become a volunteer cookie baker, you can contact the cookie chairperson (Rachel) at 230-4459. Beginning with zero funds, the Saint Joseph Altar relies completely on the generosity of the parishioners and neighbors that bring in all the homemade food. It takes countless volunteers and many hours to construct and decorate the altar and serve the food. For more information on the St. Joseph Altar or how you can volunteer to honor St. Joseph, call the church rectory at 337-937-6888. All volunteers are working toward a common goal of helping those in need in our community.
