Kaplan's Drake Abshire (7) tries to bring down a Richwood runner.

Lane Marceaux of Kaplan goes low to tackle a Rams runner.

Richwood stops Kaplan from going to the Superdome

KAPLAN - The best way to beat the Kaplan Pirates is to keep their offense off the field. That is what the Richwood Rams did Friday night in front a packed E.D, Memorial Field crowd.
In the final 7:30 minutes of the game, the Rams pounded the ball down the gut of the Pirates defense, which led to a 15-8 victory over Kaplan.
It is the second straight year Kaplan falls in the Class 3A semifinals.
The Rams scored the ago-ahead touchdown with 3:48 to play in the game. It capped off a 50-yard, 8-play drive, which featured all running plays.
“We normally go with the spread offense, but I knew would could run the football up the middle,” said Richwood head coach Robert Arvie. “I told my offensive coordinator to quit throwing and just pound it.”
On the game-winning drive, Richwood tailback darted 27 yards for a first down and put the ball down to the Kaplan 28-yard-line.
The Rams drove down to the 3-yard line and called time out when they were facing a fourth down from three. After back to back time outs to figure out if they wanted to kick a field goal or go for it, the Rams went for it on fourth down. Watson found a hole to run through thanks to a massive offensive line. The two-point conversion gave the Rams a 15-8 lead.
Kaplan got one more possession with four minutes to play in the game but would turn the ball over.
“They pretty much played our game,” said Kaplan head coach Stephen Lotief. “They just stayed on the field a lot longer on offense than we did. It’s harder to play defense than offense.”
The Pirates were without fullback Braylon Romero, who broke his foot against St. James. Taking over at fullback was Rhett Menard, who also played linebacker.
Kaplan’s quarterback, Trae Case, played all game with a hurt ankle.
KHS did not score in the first half and was down 7-0.
Kaplan did manage to put together a 92-yard drive capped off with an 18-yard scoring run by Thibeaux with 3:51 left in the third frame. Menard scored two points for KHS, as the Pirates went ahead, 8-7.
It remained that way until the Rams scored the game-winner with four minutes to play in the game.
“We lost to a good team. We made mistakes and you can not do that against a team like Richwood,” Lotief added.
The Pirates had a chance to score in the second quarter. On a fourth down, from the 2, Richwood stopped them.
“They didn’t do much different than what we thought,” Lotief said. “They just outweighed us so much. We held them to 15 points, and we had our chances. The fourth-and-goal, they got theirs and we didn’t. That happens.”
Eighth-seeded Richwood (11-3) will meet West Feliciana, a 45-26 winner over Jennings, in next Friday’s Class 3A title game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Thibeaux finished with 116 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown.
Watson led his team with 21 carries for 105 yards and a score.

Piles of dirt have been placed on the bridge to block traffic from crossing on South John Hardy Drive.

DOTD closes bridge on South John Hardy Drive in Abbeville

Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza received a surprise phone call from the Department of Transportation (DOTD) about the closing of a bridge in Abbeville.
DOTD informed the mayor that the small bridge on South John Hardy Drive, near the Lafitte Shopping Center, will be closed indefinitely.
Piazza said, according to DOTD’s inspection, the bridge did not meet weight payload standards, so it had to be closed until it is repaired.
The city is responsible for the cost of upgrading and repairing the bridge.
The mayor could not give a time period as to when it would be repaired.
He called School Superintendent Jerome Puyau, 911, the police department, the fire department and others to inform them of the bridge closer.

Crews are making repairs to a damaged crossarm.

Power back on in Kaplan

Update: Power has been restored in the City of Kaplan.

KAPLAN — Parts of the City of Kaplan will be without power Thursday as crews worked to repair a crossarm on an ENTERGY substation.
Workers with the City of Kaplan and SLEMCO were on site Thursday morning awaiting ENTERGY’s crew to make repairs to its equipment.
Mary Laurent, a spokesperson for SLEMCO, said the repairs had to be done immediately.
“Making repairs now will prevent more serious destruction later and will keep the line from falling to the ground, which is extremely dangerous to the public,” Laurent said. “The work cannot safely be done while the transmission grid remains energized.”
“At this time we are not sure how long the outage will be, but crews will be working as quickly as possible.”
“We appreciate your patience and your understanding.”

Rev. Deacon Madge McLain is the new face at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

McLain new deacon at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Abbeville

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church welcomed Rev. Deacon Madge McLain to Abbeville a little more than three months ago.
It is another stop on the journey, one that has brought her through various jobs and eventually to the church.
“In August of this year,” McLain said, “I was ordained as a transitional deacon, a ministry that must be fulfilled for a period of six months. In February of 2018, I will be made a priest in the Episcopal church and my hope is to continue at St. Paul’s for many years.”
McLain’s early years took her to many places.
“Having a petroleum engineer as a daddy and being born in an era of exploration and oil production, meant that our family moved considerably,” McLain said. “I was actually born in Lafayette and growing up, I would call numerous places in Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma home. As a junior in high school the family returned to Lafayette where I finished high school and graduated from U. S. L. with a degree in Behavioral Sciences.”
McLain said she enjoyed living in different parts of the country, but is happy to have made Lafayette and Acadiana her home for the last 35 years.
“It has been my experience that each part of the country is unique and wonderful in its own way,” McLain said, “but there is nowhere quite like Acadiana.”
As for the career part of life, McLain spent most of that time in retail purchasing and management.
“I spent a number of years with the J.C. Penney Co. and then with Marshall’s Nursery, a retail plant nursery and gift shop, for 28 years,” McLain said. “When Marshall, the owner, retired and I was forced to go once again into the job market, I was “adopted” by Ted Viator, a landscape architect and event coordinator in Lafayette.
“While working for Ted, my call to ordained ministry rang out and I began the journey toward ordination.”
That journey began with a simple question.
“I did not know that I was called to ordained ministry until I was asked by my parish priest to consider the discernment process,” McLain said. “Quiet prayer and reflection made it clear that I would begin this process that I was called to begin. Overall this process, in the depth and thoroughness of discovery, took about two years. After obtaining approval from our Bishop and the commission on ministry, my ministry education of three years began.”
McLain is happy to have found herself in Abbeville, a place that has had a welcoming feeling.
“It is an extraordinary thing to me that being only 21 miles apart that Lafayette and Abbeville are so very different,” McLain said. “Abbeville moves to a rhythm of kindness and gentleness and where the days move in a dimension of time that I have not ever experienced. People in Abbeville make time for others, time for family, time for friends, time for strangers, such as I was only three months ago.
“I have been welcomed into this community with open arms.”
Abbeville is a place, McLain said, she is certain has strong ties to faith, regardless of the denomination.
“This is a community that is rooted in faith of a number of different faith traditions,” McLain said. “One need only drive around town on Sunday morning for witness of where the heart of this town exists.”
After only a few months, McLain’s heart is in Abbeville.
“Perhaps the best way that I can summarize how I feel about Abbeville and my St. Paul’s family, is that I just believe that I will stay awhile,” McLain said.
