North Vermilion rally falls short at Westgate

NEW IBERIA — The North Vermilion Tigers rallied in the second half but fell short, 19-13, in a District 5-4A game at Westgate on Thursday night.
The Patriots (2-5 overall, 0-2 district) rallied in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass from Logan Thompson to Myles Johnson with about 11 minutes to go. The 2-point try failed.
North Vermilion then kicked off, and on the ensuing series, Patriots defensive back James Higinbotham intercepted a pass and returned it about 25 yards for a pick 6 to get the Patriots to within 19-13 following the PAT.

Kaplan, Erath to square off Friday night

KAPLAN — Kaplan’s run defense was on the mark against Crowley to open the District 5-3A slate this past Friday with a 22-13 win.
The Pirates (5-1 overall, 1-0 in district) are looking to maintain that tough defensive effort this week when they travel to face Erath in another district game. Kaplan has allowed only 13.8 points a game this year, including surendreing only 13 to Crowley.
Kaplan also limited star running back Omar Butler to 77 yards on 15 carries.

Erath, Kaplan to square off Friday night

ERATH — The Erath Bobcats are embracing the underdog role when they host Kaplan in a District 5-3A game between the two Vermilion Parish rivals, head coach Eric LeBlanc said.
Erath is 1-5 overall and 0-1 in district following a road loss to St. Martinville this past week. Kaplan is 5-1 and 1-0.
“We’re fighting for our season,” LeBlanc said. “Looking at point spread,we’re loooking like we’re severely underdogs. We’re going into it and we’re loving it in practice. We’re working like it.”

Three parish teams well-situated with power points

With only four regular-season games remaining, three Vermilion Parish teams are in good shape to make the playoffs, while the others need a lot of help.
This week, the three teams in the playoff picture are Abbeville, Kaplan and Vermilion Catholic.
According to Geauxprep.com website, these three teams rank No. 24 or higher in the latest power point rankings.
In the Division II Power Point ranking, Abbeville (4-2) is No. 14, and Kaplan (5-1) is No. 20.
The top 28 teams earn a playoff berth in Division II, and the top 8-seeded teams get a first-round bye.

Vermilion Catholic ranked No. 2 in Single-A poll

Vermilion Catholic remained No. 2 in the latest Class A statewide football poll conducted by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
VC (6-0) is second behind Ouachita Christian (6-0), the team that edged the Eagles in the Division IV select state championship game in 2022.
Vermilion Catholic remains the lone Vermilion Parish team receiving votes in the rankings.
VC plays at Jeanerette (5-1) in a district game on Friday.
