He was neither fool nor fraud

Questions turned into consternation when a mysterious stranger tried to buy every square inch of public land in Cameron Parish in 1883.
The news of the offer first appeared in the Lake Charles Commercial in May, in a report that “a gentleman from Cameron Parish … went to Baton Rouge [to buy] some State lands, and was informed … that an application had already been made [for] all of the State lands in that parish.”
The Cameron gentleman was so flummoxed that he “returned as he went, not even being able to ascertain who it was that made application for the lands.”

Hilary’s long journey home

The solemn bugle tones of “Taps” and the 21-gun salute from a military honor guard were long overdue when Army Pvt. Hillary Soileau was finally laid to rest in Cedar Hill cemetery in Washington on May 21.
Nearly 80 years overdue.
He was listed as missing after a World War II battle on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific and only identified last December.

Try electro-anthropology for your ails

There appeared to be more skeptics than believers when a Professor Shaw, self-proclaimed scientist, classical scholar, and creator (and likely sole proprietor) of the Science of Electro-Anthropology began touring south Louisiana just before the Civil War.
People said his lectures were entertaining, sometimes amusing, but probably had little to do with science. Reading the old accounts, it seems to this unscientific mind that electro-anthropology was nothing more than plain old hypnotism, but that he was very good at it.

Conventional wisdom, common consensus, and general opinion. Regardless of what label you give it, people look to others for approval and acceptance before they embark on a particular path. The thought of being criticized is a terrifying thought for most. How many people have been dissuaded from pursuing their goals due the negative reaction from those with whom they have shared their dreams?
