Man Arrested After Shooting Police Officer in Rayne

RAYNE – Shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 27, Louisiana State Police was requested by the Rayne Police Department to investigate a shooting incident resulting in the injury of one of their officers.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 in the 800 block of N. Polk Ave., and resulted in the arrest of 31-year-old Dustin L. Benoit of Rayne.

Federal officials issue guidance for Louisiana’s $1.2 billion Flood Mitigation allocation

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has issued a Federal Register Notice for the $1.2 billion mitigation allocation made to Louisiana as part of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. The guidance provides guidelines on eligible activities and investments that the state hopes to advance Louisiana’s pioneering long-term flood risk reduction and resilience initiative.

Abbeville Chief urges assistance from public

In the wake of two homicides during the past three weeks, Abbeville Chief of Police Bill Spearman said every effort is being taken to solve the crimes.
From extra manpower to calling in assistance from other agencies, Spearman said it has been done.
“We are reaching out to everybody,” Spearman said.
That includes the public.
During a press conference Friday afternoon, Spearman said it is tips from the public that can help as much as anything, not only in solving the two recent homicides, but helping to make Abbeville an overall safer place.

Abbeville Police to conduct sobriety checkpoint

The Abbeville Police Department, through funding provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, are participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which runs through September 2, 2019.
Officers of the Abbeville Police Department will have designated D.W.I. patrols, searching for impaired drivers. Officers will also be looking out for other violations, such as moving violations and seatbelt usage.
On Saturday, August 24, 2019, the Abbeville Police Department will also bee conducting a sobriety checkpoint within the city limits of Abbeville.
