Task Force makes arrests in Vermilion Parish

According to Sheriff Mike Couvillon, the Vermilion Municipal and Sheriff’s Narcotics Task Force made the following arrests for narcotics related offenses within the parish.
• Dion Green (Date of birth12-27-81) of Abbeville, arrested for two counts of possession of a legend drug, possession of Cloazepam, two counts of possession of Alprazolam, possession of Dextroamphetimine, possession of Amphetamine, removal of labeling, possession with the intent to distribute synthetic marijuana.

Abbeville's sales tax proposal focus of Chamber town hall

Like any tax, the City of Abbeville’s proposed half-cent sales tax that will be on the ballot for the May 4 special election has been a point of much discussion.
The Abbeville City Council voted last month to call a special election, with the idea that the half-cent sales tax will generate funds to provide raises for all full-time city employees. Proponents say the measure is the best option to create a new revenue stream for raises, while some from the business community say an increase to sales tax could be detrimental.

High-speed chase, crash leads to arrest by Abbeville Police

On April 10, the Abbeville Police Department’s K9 officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop a vehicle on North Bailey Street near Charity Street.
After activating the emergency lights, the vehicle turned onto Charity Street and began to accelerate. The officer activated his siren, and the vehicle began to speed up more.

SLCC is expanding its short-term welding program in Abbeville and Opelousas.

SLCC EXPANDING SHORT-TERM WELDING PROGRAM TO ABBEVILLE & OPELOUSAS

LAFAYETTE – South Louisiana Community College will be offering its 15-week Basic Welding program at its Gulf Area Campus in Abbeville and its T.H. Harris Campus in Opelousas beginning in May. The Corporate College division already offers short-term welding courses in Lafayette and Morgan City.
The expansion of this program is to meet industry needs.

Residents are raking and cleaning their yards, which is keeping the police jury busy

Vermilion Parish Police Jury adjusts schedule to roadside debris pickup

Spring has arrived in Vermilion Parish, which means yard work is underway, which also means more than your average amount of debris will be alongside roads.
Abbeville’s police jurors are worried that the new system that the Vermilion Parish Police Jury has been using for picking up roadside debris will be backed up.
For the last few months, the police jury has separated Vermilion Parish into three zones. The grab trucks are in those specific zones on different days of the month.
