Sounds on the Square kicks off spring session Thursday in Abbeville

Spring is officially underway.
With that, Sounds on the Square is returning this evening its spring run.
The event will be held today from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Magdalen Square in downtown Abbeville. Sponsored by the City of Abbeville, the outdoor concert series is free to the public.
“I invite everyone to come out,” Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza said. “We are looking forward to beautiful weather and a nice event.”
Forest Huval will take the stage to kick off Sounds on the Square.

Erath Aldermen hire bill collector to collect unpaid utility bills; change in camper ordinance

ERATH — The town of Erath is getting serious with collecting outstanding debt owed to them by residents.
The aldermen approved the hiring of a collection company to try and recoup money owed to the town by residents who did not pay their water bill, electric bill or sewer bill.
The Louisiana Municipality Association (LMA) will charge the resident an additional 25 percent of the money the resident owes the town. If the resident owes the town $100 for a late bill and it is contacted by LMA asking for payment, the resident will now have to pay $125.

Attorney General Landry issues warning of government scams

BATON ROUGE — Attorney General Jeff Landry is warning Louisiana consumers of potential callers posing as federal agents in an attempt to obtain personal information.
“These types of scammers are shameless criminals who will go to great lengths to get your information,” said General Landry. “It is important to remember that legitimate officials from government agencies like the IRS will never call asking for personal information.”

Agents located “high grade” marijuana in an Abbeville residence after executing a search warrant last Thursday.

Vermilion Narcotics Task Force arrests one suspect, looking for another

According to Sheriff Mike Couvillon, the Vermilion Municipal and Sheriff’s Narcotics Task Force made the following arrests for narcotics related offenses within the parish.
On Thursday, March 16, agents with the Vermilion Municipal and Sheriff’s Narcotic Task Force, along with the Assistance of the VPSO Criminal Investigations and Lafayette Police Department conducted an investigation leading to a search warrant being executed at the address of 1811 Cherokee St. in Abbeville.

Erath Aldermen debate making officer full time

ERATH — One Erath alderman voted against making a part-time Erath police officer full time, while another Erath alderman said the police budget can afford it.
In the end, the Erath aldermen approved taking a part time police officer who was on a three month probation period to become a full time officer and made the officer full time.
