Omega Protein is pleased to announce the launch of its newest and largest fishing vessel operating in Louisiana, the F/V Vermilion, to start the 2018 Gulf of Mexico fishing season. The Vermilion marks a significant upgrade to the Company’s fleet, with state-of-the-art technological and safety features that will improve worker safety and increase efficiency.
It is the latest investment made by the Company in its Gulf fishing communities.
The Vermilion was officially christened at a ceremony on Saturday at Omega Protein’s Intracoastal City facility.

Abbeville wins Cleanest City District title

As they passed through Abbeville on Tuesday morning, judges with the Louisiana Garden Club Federation liked what they saw.
That is apparent, as the judges awarded the city with a another district title in the Cleanest City Contest. The city won in District III. This marks five in a row and six out of the last eight times the city has won such an honor.
“It’s nice to have this victory again,” Mayor Mark Piazza said. “We are really excited about it.”

Putting space to good use

An empty space owned by the city will soon have a new purpose.
Plans are in the works to remodel the old Vermilion Parish Tourism office on Veterans Memorial Drive and turn it into a space that can be utilized as a meeting place for various civic organizations.
“If the Kiwanis Club wants to meet here or the Rotarians want to use it,” Councilman Francis Touchet Jr. said, “we can have a place for them to be able to do that.”
“For the various organizations, there is going to be a space if they want to use it.”

The bridge is open to traffic.

Bridge on John Hardy reopens

After more than four months, and what feels like longer for many drivers in Abbeville, the bridge on South John Hardy Drive reopened Monday afternoon.
The bridge had been closed since Nov. 30, 2017, when officials with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development unexpectedly closed the bridge after an inspection.
“There has been some tremendous patience,” Councilman Francis Plaisance said. “We have been receiving all these phone calls about the bridge.
“It’s a lot more traveled than even I realized.”

Spearman: New chief in Abbeville

On July 1, William “Bill” Spearman takes office as the new police chief for Abbeville.
With 38 years of law enforcement beneath his belt, Spearman’s plans for the city that has been drawn out for many years, and now is his chance to watch those plans unfold, one of which includes creating community action groups as his top priority.
In his announcement to run for Chief of Police, Spearman credited his long list of experience in law enforcement as the perfect candidate for the position.
