Abbeville’s Thomas Poché named Vermilion Parish High School Student of the Year

Thomas Poché set a goal for himself after his freshmen year at Abbeville High.
He would add something to his plate each year, a new challenge.
“I was just in band,” Poché said. “I wanted to do more.”
During this sophomore year he began playing tennis. He took up chorus during his junior year. Poché, who all the while maintained a 4.0 GPA, said he wanted to end up as a well-rounded student by the time he became a senior.

Changes proposed for water, sewer rates in Maurice

MAURICE — Upgrades are being planned for the Village of Maurice’s water and sewer systems.
Construction of a new sewer plant will be completed sometime in 2020, while improvements to the water system will be made prior to that time.
At its regular meeting on Jan. 24, the Maurice Board of Aldermen agreed on a resolution declaring the intent to issue not exceeding $8,620,000 of sewer revenue bonds. The board made a similar move last October when it issued $3 million in bonds for water system improvements.

Superintendent Jerome Puyau, Erath Middle Assistant Principal Marlene Primeaux and Assistant Superintendent Paul Hebert (L-R) present Zachary Broussard with his award for Parish Middle School Student of the Year.

Erath Middle’s Zachary Broussard named Parish Student of the Year

ERATH — On a given day at Erath Middle School, you may see Zachary Broussard picking up trash off the ground during his lunch break.
Broussard, an eighth grader, is not taking part in some sort of punishment. Rather, he is simply trying to make his school a better place.
It is one of the many attributes that has gone into Broussard being named the Vermilion Parish Middle School Student of the Year.
“This is a big honor for me,” Broussard said. “I thought I did well in the interview, so I thought I had a chance, but I didn’t think that I would win.

Assistant Superintendent Paul Hebert, LeBlanc Principal Susie Stephen and Superintendent
Jerome Puyau (L-R) present Cameron Soirez with his award for Student of the Year.

LeBlanc’s Soirez named Vermilion Parish Elementary Student of the Year

If there is a secret to success for Cameron Soirez, it is some simple advise his parents gave him.
“They always encourage me to work as hard as I can,” Soirez said, “and to just be myself.”
That advise has worked just fine for Soirez, a fifth-grade student at LeBlanc Elementary School, so much so, that he has some hardware to prove it.
The Vermilion Parish School District recently announced Soirez as the Vermilion Parish Elementary Student of the Year. Soirez is the son of Jeremy and Dr. Kayla Soirez.
