Louisiana awarded $55.5 million to improve reading, writing skills of students

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana has been selected to receive a $55.5 million Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy (SRCL) grant to improve the reading and writing skills of struggling students, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Louisiana is one of 11 states selected to benefit from the federal grant, and the only state to receive it three consecutive times.

Glenn Lege named King of 69th Cattle Festival in Abbeville

Glenn Lege will reign as the King of the 69th Annual Louisiana Cattle Festival.
The Louisiana Cattle Festival that will be held Oct. 13 through Oct. 15 in Abbeville.
Glenn Lege was born in the small community of Esther, LA. He is a lifelong resident of Vermilion Parish.
He is married to the former Patricia Brasseux and they are the proud parents of six children and four grandchildren. Glenn received his education in Vermilion Parish, attending Mt. Carmel in the elementary years and then going on to graduate in 1969 from Vermilion Catholic High School.

The bus crashed into two houses.

School bus involved in Tuesday morning crash in Abbeville

More than two dozen students were reportedly on a school bus involved in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning in Abbeville.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Franks Alley and South Young Street shortly before 7 a.m.
Abbeville Police cited the driver of the car involved in the crash for failure to yield at the stop sign.

Senator Jonathan Perry receives multiple awards

District 26 State Senator Jonathan Perry is the recipient of three prestigious awards lauding his accomplishments and recognizing his support of Louisiana’s families, businesses and public safety. The Louisiana Family Forum, the Southwest Louisiana Economic Development Alliance, and the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association all chose to honor Senator Perry with an annual recognition.
