Abbeville man found dead shortly after allegedly killing girlfriend

After allegedly killing his girlfriend in Lafayette, an Abbeville man traveled to Kaplan where police said he turned a gun on himself.
Police reportedly found Oris Briggs, 29, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Kaplan Monday night. No further information has been released regarding the incident.
According to Lafayette Police, a domestic altercation occurred around 10 p.m. on Monday between Briggs and his girlfriend, 27-year-old Katrina Broussard of Lake Charles. The incident ended with Broussard being shot and killed at an apartment complex near Guilbeau Road in Lafayette.
Police said Briggs fled the scene and traveled to Kaplan. Authorities found Briggs dead around 11 p.m. on Monday.

Patricia Marie Dore

Feb. 26, 1945 – Feb. 4, 2017

Patricia Marie Dore died of natural causes at her home in Seattle on February 4, 2017. She was 71 years old. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ann (Fontenette), father, Morris, and brothers Lewis and Morris (Jr.) Dore.
She married Don Costa Seawell in 1974. They divorced and she married Kenneth Pounds in 1978. That marriage ended in divorce.
Patricia was baptized at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church in Abbeville, La., and graduated from Holy Rosary Institute in Lafayette, La. She attended Marylhurst University, and later became among the first African American flight attendants hired by United Airlines in the 1960s. After initially being based in Chicago, she moved to Seattle where she worked Honolulu, Tokyo and Hong Kong and other international flights. She was awarded a citation from United for service above and beyond duty.
She enjoyed traveling the world, including China, where she climbed the Great Wall, and Germany, where she visited with her brother, Lewis, who was stationed at the U.S. Army base in Heidelberg. Rome and Paris were among her favorite cities.
Pat was known for her kindness and sense of humor. She always put the needs of others before her own.
Survivors include sisters, Jacquelyn Merriwether (Clyde), Seattle; Bobbie Dore Foster, (Bernie) Portland, Ore.; brother, Adam Frazier Dore (Terry), Gueydan, La.; five nieces and six nephews.
A family memorial service took place in Seattle on Feb. 12. Arrangements by cremation, Southwest Mortuary, Seattle. Interment, Evergreen Washelli, Seattle.

Lawrence Paul Mathers

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, in Maurice, on Friday, February 17, 2017 at 10:00AM for Lawrence "Larry" Paul Mathers, 84, who passed away following a short illness on February 12, 2017, surrounded by his family.
Father Keith Landry, will conduct the Memorial Mass. Inurnment will follow at St. Alphonsus Mausoleum.
Larry, a resident of Maurice, was born in Endicott, New York to the late James and Nelda Mathers. After graduating from Vestal Central High School, he entered the United States Air Force and was stationed at Sampson Air Force Base. On the invitation from a friend, he moved to Lafayette to attend SLI, now ULL, where he graduated in Business Administration and met the love of his life and wife of 59 years, Glenda Rae Morton. Together, along with their six children, they made Cajun Country their home.
Larry worked for many years at Braun Welding Supply before retiring from Coastal Chemical in Abbeville. An avid golfer and “Muni” regular, he became Assistant Manager of the Hebert Municipal Golf Course, his favorite job of all.
As a lover of life, Larry was a devoted man of the Catholic Faith and an active member of the community. He was a parishioner of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He prayed the Rosary on Radio Maria for 16 years, volunteered for VITA where he taught adults to read and donated blood regularly all his life. He also loved sports, especially golf, baseball and football. As a fan he was seen regularly supporting his children and grandchildren at sporting events, and was a lifelong fan of the UL Ragin Cajuns.
He is survived by his wife Glenda; his son, Pete and wife Linda; his five daughters, Laurie Mathers Meaux and husband Ken, Patti Mathers Domingue and husband Lamont, Theresa Mathers Landry and husband Marc, Yvette Mathers Touchet and husband Joe Don, and Gwen Mathers Constantine and husband Darin; his thirteen grandchildren, Brandon and Ryan Mathers, Egan Meaux, Monti and Garon Domingue, Ian Landry, Rynn, Rylee and Rhett Touchet, Aubrey, Ainsley, Aani, and Callun Constantine; his six great grandchildren, Paige, Brennan, Brailee, Evelyn, and Liam Mathers, and Charlie Smith; his great great grandchild, Wyatt Champagne; and his sister, Suzanne Mathers Cook, of Binghamton, New York.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Mathers, Jr.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church on Friday, February 17, 2017 from 9:00AM until the rosary beginning at 10:00AM. The Mass will immediately follow the rosary.
The family would like to thank Dr. Eric Fontenot, the Sixth and Eighth Floor Staff at Lafayette General Hospital, the staff of Lady of the Oaks Retirement Manor, and Hospice Compassus for the care and compassion given to our beloved Larry.

Luke Ulysse Bourque

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 2:30pm at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church for Mr. Luke Ulysse Bourque, 79, who passed away on February 10, 2017 at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Mandeville.
Father O Joseph Breaux, Pastor of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral service.
Burial will take place in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Maurice, La.
Mr. Bourque, a resident of Maurice, was the son of the late Luke Bourque and the former Suzanne Baudoin. In his younger days, Luke enjoyed fishing. Later in life, Mr. Bourque enjoyed reading the newspaper, going for walks, and an occasional casino trip.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Mae Bourque Menard; numerous nieces and nephews; and his sister-in-law, companion, and best friend, Eve Denais Bourque.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Rose Denais Bourque; parents; five brothers, Noah, Mabry, Elie Roy, Robby, and Alphe Bourque; and five sisters, Elizabeth Bourque Meche, Ann Bourque Romero, Nita Bourque Berard, Mary Bourque, and Evie Bourque.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home of Maurice on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from 12:00PM until time of service.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Bourque’s honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.

July 26, 1919-February 12, 2017

Abbeville-A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday February 14, 2017 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Abbeville, LA. Cecile Mire Mayard left to be with Lord at the age of 97 on Sunday February 12, 2017 at Eastridge Nursing Home.
She will be laid to rest at St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery. Reverend Louis J. Richard will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Con Celebrant will be Reverend Floyd J. Calais and Reverend Chester Arceneaux.
Cecile was born in Andrew, LA to the late Nazire Mire and Nella Duhon Mire on July 26, 1919 and was a resident of Abbeville for most of her life. Cecile was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, sister and friend. Many of Abbeville’s brides remember Ms. Cecile as “the lady at Bordelon’s” who helped them set up their bridal registry. She retired from Bordelon Hardware after 25 years in the Bridal Department. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and gardening, but baking was her greatest pleasure. A visit to her home almost came with a guarantee that one would leave with a cake or lemon pie that had been prepared with love and enjoyment. She loved laughing with friends and always loved a good joke. A kind and generous person, she was always ready and willing to help and give to someone in need.
Cecile loved and lived her faith by participating in daily mass for most of her life. She was a Eucharistic and Homebound Minister for over 40 years. She also served the church by counting the church offerings and as a member of the Altar Society and the Lay Carmelites.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Florine Mayard Veazey and Janel Mayard Clark, and her son-in-law, Raymond “Tish” Clark. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Nancy Veazey Comeaux and Joey Veazey; one great grandson, Nicholas J. Comeaux and his wife, Nicole Simon Comeaux; a great granddaughter, Jessica Comeaux LeBlanc and her husband Matt LeBlanc. Cecile, also known as “Granny”, is also survived by four great great grandchildren, James and Christian Comeaux and Zoe Elizabeth and Kyleigh Elise LeBlanc. Also left to cherish a lifetime of memories are her sister, Melba Breaux and two sisters-in-law, Maudry T. Mire and Nola B. Meyers, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Cecile was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Olivier Mayard; brother, Louis J. Mire; nephew, Patrick Ray Breaux; and her son-in-law, Roland “Snow” Veazey.
At the funeral mass, readings will be done by her granddaughter, Nancy Veazey Comeaux and godchild, Deborah Meaux.
Gift bearers will be her grandson Joey Veazey and her great grandchildren Jessica LeBlanc and Nicholas Comeaux.
Pallbearers will be Kern Meyers, Andre Motty, Jerome Meaux, Keith Bergeron, Matt LeBlanc, Raleigh Mayard and Michael Breaux. Honorary pallbearers will be Carroll Duhon, Randy Delcambre, Raymond Clark and Russell Richard
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to family and friends for the love and support shown in the last few months of Cecile’s life here on earth. Special thanks are also extended to the Hospice of Acadiana Staff, especially Robin Broussard, Stephanie Claudel and Jenee Segura. Appreciation is also extended to the CNAs, sitters and all the staff of Eastridge Nursing Home for the special care and attention shown to Cecile.
The family request visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home of Abbeville on Monday February 13, 2017 from 1:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 PM; Tuesday February 14, 2017 from 9:00 AM until 1:45 PM when the procession will depart for the church.

Alaina Savoy - Willis Meaux to wed

Carl and Renee Meaux of Kaplan and Ann and Gaynal Savoy of Crowley, are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their children, Alaina Savoy and Willis Meaux.
The wedding will take place on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne.
The grandparents of the future bride are Dorothy and Raymond Mouton of Rayne and Thelma and the late Ernest Alleman of Rayne.
Alaina is a 2012 graduate of Notre Dame High School and a 2016 graduate of UL at Lafayette with a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education. She is currently employed as a Kindergarten teacher at Indian Bayou Elementary.
The prospective groom’s grandparents are Peggy and the late Dr. James Camel of Kaplan and Mary Faye and the late Willis Meaux of Kaplan.
Willis is a 2008 graduate of Vermilion Catholic High School, and LSUE and L.E. Fletcher Community College with a Business Management and Petroleum Technology degree. He is currently employed with Energy Transfer.
