When the game was on the line, the Vermilion Catholic Eagles answered in a big way.
Sophomore kicker John Robert Allums kicked two field goals in the final three minutes of the game to help his team beat Opelousas Catholic 26-23 on Friday.
The young man nailed a 25-yarder with 15 seconds to play, giving the Eagles the dramatic 26-23 win over the Class 2A team.
“Our kicker has ice in his veins,” said VC head coach Kevin Fouquier.
Allums kicked a 27-yard field goal with 2:44 to play in the game that tied the game 23-23.

The Abbeville Wildcats faced a passing team the first week and held their own. Now, they have a new challenge tonight.
The Class 3A Church Point Bears, who are ranked No. 4 in the latest Class 3A SportsWriters Poll, battle the Abbeville Wildcats (1-0) in Wildcat Stadium.
The Wildcats are coming off a 39-30 win over West St. Mary, while Church Point beat Jennings 30-21, who is ranked at No. 10 in Class 3A.
Abbeville head coach Kevin Kern said, “We will be tested. Church Point has a good team, but I think we are ready to step up.”

KAPLAN - OK, so maybe the 2018 Kaplan Pirates are going to have a great season after all.
The Pirates, who are ranked No. 3 in Class 3A, did not play that way last week in the Acadia/Vermilion Parish Jamboree. Fast forward a week, and the better Pirate team showed up Friday to give the Class 5A Acadiana Rams all they could handle. Time ran out as Kaplan fell 27-20 in a thriller.
