Russo Trophy returns to Kaplan

KAPLAN — The Peter Russo Memorial Trophy is back in Kaplan after a three-year absence.
In a district game, the Kaplan Pirates beat the Abbeville Wildcats 44-0 on Thursday. After opening the season with a loss to Ascension Episcopal, the Pirates have won six straight and are also 1-0 in the district.  The Wildcats, on the other hand, lost their seventh straight under new head coach Jonathan Zenon.

Luke McLain had busy night for Vermilion Catholic

Vermilion Catholic junior Luke McLain was busy on Friday night against Opelousas Catholic.
He played running back on offense and carried the ball six times for 62 yards.
He also played linebacker on defense, finishing with more than five tackles.
Because starting kicker Alex Broussard had a leg injury, McLain, the backup kicker, was promoted to first-string kicker on Wednesday - two days before the game.
How did he perform? Well, especially for a backup.

Vermilion Catholic takes care of Opelousas Catholic

The No.1 Vermilion Catholic Eagles won their 33rd consecutive regular season game on homecoming Friday when they defeated the No. 16 Opelousas Catholic Vikings 50-21.
The Eagles (8-0, 2-0) used a 22-point third quarter to break open what was a one-score halftime lead. VC head coach Broc Prejean shouldered the blame for the 21-14 score at the break and asked his team to get his back.

LHSAA suspends North Vermilion/Comeaux football teams for this Friday's game

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) has suspended Comeaux High School and North Vermilion Patriots for this Friday’s games.
In other words, the Patriots and the Spartans will stay home this Friday. The Patriots were scheduled to be on the road to battle the Teurlings Rebels.
It was the Rebels’ homecoming game, and now they are scrambling for an opponent.
The Spartans were scheduled to play the St. Thomas More Cougars.
They were suspended due to a fight after last week’s NV/Comeaux football game.

Delcambre drops district opener to Loreauville

DELCAMBRE – The Delcambre Panthers opened District 7-2A play Friday night with a 58-0 home loss to the Loreauville Tigers.
The Panthers (3-3, 0-1) were overmatched from the start as Loreauville scored four touchdowns in the opening quarter and added a fifth seconds into the second quarter to take a commanding 36-0 lead with 11:55 to play in the first half.
 “It’s no secret they’re the better football team, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” Delcambre head coach Artie Liuzza said.
