After playing pipes for 55 years, Meaux hanging it up

KAPLAN — Not many of us can say we have had a job for 55 years, but one Kaplan man can.
Lenwood Meaux, 67, has been playing the organ at Holy Rosary Catholic Church for Masses, funerals weddings, or any other special occasions that take place in the church.
Meaux, a self-taught musician, began playing when he has been in 7th grade.
“When Monsignor Berbe’s sister, Miss Cecile, quit playing,” said Meaux, “I knocked on the rectory door and offered my services. Father Fernando Roy accepted and the rest is history.

LAFAYETTE – LAGCOE is proud to announce the winners of the Future Energy Professionals (FEP) scholarship. Recognizing the importance of collegiate majors from disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), LAGCOE has created this scholarship in an effort to attract professional talent capable of maintaining a high level of technical proficiency within the oil & gas industry. The scholarships are awarded to goal-oriented students planning to enroll into a Louisiana College in pursuit of a STEM-centric Degree.

Abbeville extends smoking ban to bars, bingo hall

By the beginning of September, the inside of all public places in Abbeville will be smoke free.
After hearing debate on both sides of the issue during its regular meeting Tuesday evening, the Abbeville City Council voted to extend the city’s smoking ban to cover bars and gaming facilities, which includes bingo halls. The two areas had previously been exempt from the smoke-free ordinance that began on Jan. 1, 2015.
This amendment to the ordinance will go into effect on Sept. 1, 2018.

Net privacy issue will return to Capitol

This year and last there were bills filed in about 25 states to address privacy issues with internet service providers, and all of them were brought about by President Donald Trump’s decision to reverse a set of rules enacted by his predecessor.
The recently-adjourned regular session placed Louisiana in that category, and like practically every bill introduced in the other states the one floated here failed to gain traction.
