Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office IS INVESTIGATING RECENT THEFT OF SIDE-BY-SIDE NEAR RAYNE

RAYNE — Detectives with the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office are investigating the theft of a side-by-side from a business located in the 5700 block of Church Point Highway, north of Rayne.
The incident occurred between Feb. 7 and 10.
Unknown suspect(s) gained access to the property by cutting the fence. The stolen side-by-side is described as a 2016 two-seater Polaris 900 Ranger, green in color. It’s valued at about $15,000.
Anyone with information regarding this crime is urged to call the tips line at 789-TIPS or download the P3 app on a mobile device to report tips anonymously.
All callers will remain anonymous and can receive up to a $1,000 cash reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.

Abbeville High hosting two-day Regional powerlifting competition

The Abbeville High gymnasium will be busy Friday and Saturday with the 2020 LHSPLA West Regional Power Lifting Meet.
For the first time, the high school will be hosting the two-day event.
The girls will begin lifting Friday at 10 a.m., and it will go until around 5 p.m., and around 100 girls are lifting.
Saturday morning will be busy with more than 200 male powerlifters. That meet will go until around 7 p.m.
Vermilion Parish will be well represented. They will have athletes from Gueydan, North Vermilion, VC, Erath, Abbeville and Delcambre competing. They will be going up against lifters from New Iberia Senior High, Southside, Iota, Mamou, Sam Houston, Beau Chene, ChurchPoint and St. Louis to name a few schools.
Travis Werner, Abbeville High’s powerlifting coach, said the lifters will be competing in different weight classes. They will compete in the bench press, squat and deadlift events.
He gave the example that 11 girls from all of the high schools will be competing in the 114-pound weight class. The schools range from New Iberia Senior High to Mamou.
An Erath lifter may finish fifth at regionals in her weight class, her total lifts may be in the top 10 in Class 3A, earning her a bid to state.
Werner said there would be more than 100 volunteers helping with the two-day powerlifting regional meet.

Farrell DesOrmeaux

ABBEVILLE — A Mass of Christian Burial for Farrell DesOrmeaux will be held at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Catholic Church on Friday, February 28, 2020 at 2:30PM with Father François officiating. Burial will be followed at St. Alphonsus Cemetary in Maurice, LA.
Visitation will be at David Funeral Home of Abbeville on Friday, February 28, 2020 from 8:00AM until time of services with a recitation of the rosary at 11:00AM.
Farrell DesOrmeaux, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at Lafayette General Medical Center at the age of eighty-five. He was born on May 31, 1934, in Erath, Louisiana, as the youngest child of Huval DesOrmeaux and Esperie Richard of Erath, Louisiana. His only sister was the late Elva Jane Sonnier of Franklin, Louisiana. He was a graduate of Erath High School and afterward served in the National Guard.
He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Ellen Babineaux DesOrmeaux of Saint Martinville, Louisiana, who he married on October 27, 1951, and they spent the next sixty-eight years together. He resided in Erath for thirty eight years and later moved to Abbeville, Louisiana. He was a parishioner of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Catholic Church in Abbeville. Farrell and Ellen loved to travel and spend time with their family. He enjoyed horse racing and playing cards with his friends.
Farrell is survived by his daughter, Janice Stakes, and her husband, George Larry Stakes of Abbeville; his son, Thomas Farrell DesOrmeaux, and his wife, Kendra Hultgren DesOrmeaux of Baton Rouge; his daughter, Karen Ayo, and her husband Ted Lee Ayo of Abbeville; his daughter, Anne Asbill and her husband, Stephen Carter Asbill of Lafayette; his daughter, Jeannine Kelly of Abbeville; his daughter, Mary Katherine Breaux, and her husband Michael Wayne Breaux of Lafayette; his son, Kenny David DesOrmeaux and his wife Jamie Sullivan DesOrmeaux of Abbeville; his late son Mark Robert DesOrmeaux and his wife Adonna Broussard; nineteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren who were the absolute pride and joy of his life.
Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons.

Erath Middle’s Tovy Tran is Parish Middle School Student of the Year

Erath Middle School student Tovy Tran said she was shocked and excited with winning Parish Middle School Student of the Year. Though she found out sometime in January, she won’t get her award until the end of the year at the award ceremony.
“I’m okay with that because it is an honor in itself to be selected to represent the parish,” Tran said, “but I did get certificates throughout the process at each level”
Her favorite subject? Social Studies. Tran said that Social Studies are critical in our futures, so to learn the history so that it does not repeat itself, it very important, in her opinion.
“Since 5th grade, I have been a 4.0 student, so accomplishing something like this was a very proud moment for my family and me.”
Tran says her parents, who moved to America when she was in the first grade, were very proud of her, “Of course they speak to me in Vietnamese, since that’s where we are from, Vietnam. They like to speak to me in Vietnamese so that I never to forget my roots,” she said.
In her early years, she went to school at Eaton Park. Tran said it took her about a year to learn the English language and that once she entered her second-grade year, she had the language down to a ‘T’.
“Once I knew the language, that is when I began to thrive,” she said.
Tran said that is the baseline of anything, whether it is a language, a goal, a dream, anything.
“As long as you are true to yourself, the process may seem scary, but show them who you really are and how capable you are of getting this far, and actually, that is what I would want to let students know if ever they want to follow in my footsteps,” she said.
Tran said that when she directs her audience or whoever is listening to her speech, she is sure to project her voice and make eye contact. “If you do that, the audience will know you mean business. This could be for a job interview as well, if you want something, let them know that you can get it.”
Other than being a very intelligent and driven young woman, Tran says that in her free time, she enjoys swimming, hanging out with her friends, as well as family time. “Family is really important to me, so yes, I love hanging out with them. And other than focusing on them, I do like to focus on my education because that is very important.”
Not only are her parents proud of what she has accomplished in school, they are also proud of her dreams and goals for the future. Tran plans to attend college and Major in Optometry because she says she wants to help those who cannot see.
“My grandmother is blind, and that inspired me to help others like her, plus I have glasses and contacts. Having a career like that can also support my future family.”
Undoubtedly, Tran has a bright future ahead of her in whatever she decides to do with her life. She said she never really loses focus on anything because once she sets her mind to it, she is determined to finish.

Police Jury President Dane Hebert named to Acadiana Planning Commission Board

LAFAYETTE — The Acadiana Planning Commission has announced new officers and board members for nine-member board that governs the regional planning commission.
M. Larry Richard, President of Iberia Parish, was elected as Chair of the Board. Chester Cedars, President of St. Martin Parish, was elected as Vice-Chair. Joshua Guillory, Mayor-President of Lafayette Parish, joined as a new member and was elected Secretary-Treasurer.
Additionally, Chance Henry, President of the Acadia Parish Police Jury, and Dane Hebert, President of the Vermilion Parish Police Jury, joined as new members.
“Acadiana has tremendous assets as a region. By coming together, we leverage, rather than compete, with each other, giving Acadiana local, state and national prominence,” according to M. Larry Richard, APC Chairman and Iberia Parish President. “This means better infrastructure, jobs, development and a higher quality of life for Iberia Parish and for Acadiana.”
“St. Martin Parish has worked closely with APC to bring Acadiana together as a leader in the Louisiana Watershed Initiative,” said Chester Cedars, APC Vice Chairman and St. Martin Parish President. “Our waterways can be one of our greatest assets while also being our greatest challenge. I look forward to the development of the much-needed hydraulic and hydrological science that is needed to make data driven watershed decisions.”

‘Comic-con’ theme of today’s parade in Kaplan; Starts at 2 p.m.

KAPLAN — Comic-Con will be in Kaplan today.
Comic-Con is the theme of today’s Krewe Chic-a-la-Pie parade, which rolls at 2 p.m.
Linda Vincent, the Krewe President, said, expect to see comic characters such as Batman, Superman, Scooby-Doo and other comic book characters.
The parade will begin at the intersection of Highway 14 and Cushing Boulevard. It will go north up Cushing Boulevard, then travel in the back of Kaplan Middle School and come out on Cushing Boulevard again and head south.
No glass containers and pets are allowed at the parade.
Vincent spent Monday morning lining up the floats. She said there are at least 40 floats, trucks and trailers rolling in the parade.
“That is about average,” she said.
The Krewe takes pride in it’s family-friendly traditional Mardi Gras festivities. This year the Krewe is celebrating its 66 years of existence. The organization was started by a group of women over a cup of coffee. It was started to symbolize charity and to bring back old-time Mardi Gras to Kaplan.
The 2020 Royalty Court includes Queen Jambalaya 66 Keisa Arceneaux and King Kyle Harrington. The rest of the court consist of First Maid Deborah Mire and First Duke Michael Trahan; Second Maid Karen Bourque and Second Duke A.J. Bourque; Flower Girl Rhonda Gallet; Paige John Gallet; Captain Mary Mouton and Co-Captain Dr. Tom Price and Jesters Tawana Vaughn and Tamika Bertrand.
The King and Queen float will stop in front of the former Kaplan Herald Newspaper building and toast with Kaplan Mayor Mike Kloesel.

Alice Gaspard Domingue

ERATH – A Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Alice Gaspard Domingue, 92, will be held at 1:00PM on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Andre Metrejean officiating. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at David Funeral Home of Erath on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 from 10:00AM until the time of the services with a recitation of the rosary at 11:00AM.
A native of Vermilion Parish and a resident of Erath, Mrs. Domingue died at Eastridge Nursing Center surrounded by her family, on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at 11:45AM. She was a woman of deep faith and was known for baked homemade bread, dedication to her family and love of her grandchildren.
She is survived by a son, Eugene Dale Domingue, (Gene) of Erath; three daughters, Melisa James and her husband Mark of Erath, Betty Bertrand and her husband Reed of Erath, and Charlene Soirez and her husband Jimmy of Erath; nine grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and three great grandchildren on the way.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Domingue; her parents, Julian and Elodie Hargrave Gaspard; a daughter in law, Dayna Domingue; two brothers, John A. Gaspard and Robert (Souree’) Gaspard; and two sisters, Audrey Roy and Lou Anna Gaspard; and one great grandchild, Isla Claire Domingue.
Serving as pallbearers will be Reed Bertrand, Sr., Gene Domingue, Jimmy Soirez, Cole Domingue, Gordon Broussard, and Dale Domingue .
The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Ronald Lahasky, her physician of many years, Hospice of Acadiana, and the staff at Eastridge Nursing Center for the care and compassion shown to Ms. Alice and her family in her final days. The family would also like to thank Lynn Huntley, Francis Levine and Diane Harrison for caring for Ms. Alice in her final days.

ERATH – A Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Diane Jones Morvant, 73, will be held 12:00PM on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Andre Metrejean officiating. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Lourdes Mausoleum.
Visitation will be held at David Funeral Home of Erath on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 from 4:00PM until 9:00PM with a recitation of the rosary at 7:00PM. Visitation will resume on Thursday, February 27, 2020 from 8:00AM until the time of the services.
A native of Morgan City and a resident of Erath, Mrs. Morvant died at 5:52AM on Friday, February 21, 2020 at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center. She enjoyed being with family, music, and doing crossword puzzles. She was also a member of Cajun French Music Association.
She is survived by two sons, Joseph Morvant, Jr. and his wife Angelle of Morgan City and David Morvant and his fiancée Debbie Cuvillier of Morgan City; a daughter, Darlene L. Corcoran and her husband Bryan of Broussard; seven grandchildren, Jacob Primeaux, Kelsey Dugas, Jordon Morvant, Miranda Landry, Matthew Morvant, Hailey Corcoran, and Ashley Corcoran; and nine great grandchildren, Trevor Primeaux, Joshua Perrin, Violet Primeaux, Carter Perrin, Kyler Dupuis, Rylee Dugas, Emsley Landry, River Primeaux, and Baby Dugas (on the way).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Jones, Sr. and Pearl Lancon Jones; a daughter in law, Roxane Morvant; five brothers, Richard Jones, Jr., Frank Jones, Edward Jones, Sr., Paul Jones, and Ivan Jones, Sr.; and two sisters, Levi Arnette and Elizabeth Pennison.
Serving as pallbearers will be Matthew Benoit-Morvant, Eric Landry, Jacob Primeaux, Cody Dugas, Kevin Foret, Jr., and Rene Pennison.
