VC ends Loreauville's 20-regular season winning streak with 28-0 win

The Vermilion Catholic Eagles ended the Loreauville Tigers’ 20-game regular season winning streak on Friday.
The Class 2A Tigers entered VC, not having lost a regular season game since 2019. In 2020, the Tigers went 8-0 and then 10-0 in 2021. On Friday, Loreauville entered VC stadium 2-0 in 2022.
When the Tigers left the stadium, their winning streak was over, thanks to a 28-0 win.
VC head coach Broc Prejean said the team was aware of the 20-game winning streak.

New LHSAA playoff format affects Patriots the most

The North Vermilion Patriots football team, a Class 4A football team, could play Abbeville, Erath or Kaplan in this year’s football playoffs. Also, if the North Vermilion Patriots want to win another baseball state title, the odds are they are going to have to beat Barbe, the two-time defending Class 5A state champs, in the finals.

Please don’t feel bad because most of the coaches in Vermilion Parish were confused Friday afternoon when the LHSAA released its new playoff format for select/non-select schools.

Dartez gives Eagles a true RPO threat at quarterback

Jonathan Dartez was thrown into the starting quarterback’s role at Vermilion Catholic as a freshman after an injury to senior starter Mikie Bazar in 2021.
Dartez showed dynamic running skills, rushing for 902 yards and 15 touchdowns and throwing for 58 yards with nine TDs. He played six games at quarterback before Bazar returned from his back injury, then played receiver, running back, and whatever else the Eagles needed him to do.

Three-year starter Landon Cheek (3) will be counted on this fall as a leader for the Kaplan High School defense, which will feature from six to eight sophomores on the field. Cheek, a free safety, earned honorable mention All-State honors as a junior.

Versatile Cheek looking to make impact

KAPLAN — Landon Cheek showed great versatility on defense in 2021, earning an honorable mention to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 3A All-State football team in 2021 after an outstanding junior campaign.
His coaches are counting upon Cheek, a free safety and three-year starter for Kaplan High School to continue to play a leading role in the Pirates’ defense this season.
